Dreams of Tomorrow

Part 6:

You stagger forward more quickly, almost falling into a run. As you focus on placing one foot in front of the last you can tune out some of the pain and the confusion, just as you did when you were walking.

You won prizes at primary school for running. You remember that now as if it was something that happened in a dream. You remember the times that Kevin was on your relay team or football or anything. He was never that good at sports but then who was when they were ten years old? Kevin might be a crackpot, he might be weird but even he didn't deserve to be clobbered and kidnapped in broad daylight.

You might not know what's going on, you might not understand who these guys are or what Kevin was trying to tell you but you know you cant let him suffer for trying to help you.

You've crossed the field now and the pounding of your headache has fallen in with the rhythm of your feet. Or perhaps that happened the other way around? Who can say. The rhythm changes as you realise that you are no longer running across grass but across the tarmac of the car park. Desperately you look around, trying to spot the men who took Kevin despite the spots floating across your vision.

You see a car - one of the cars the kidnappers used - and you run towards it, hardly aware that it is already moving towards you at a considerable speed. It waits for you to dive aside but you're too focused for that. A horn begins to sounds, deep and low as your hyper-awareness Dopplers the note.

Suddenly you realise where you are and what you're doing. Until this moment only Kevin was important, now your instincts for self-preservation kick in with a vengeance. You can see nothing but the car bearing down on you, too fast now for you to move or jump aside. There is another way. You know it with a profundity you have never before experienced. Something has been preventing you from taking the other way before now but self preservation is one of the strongest instincts in the human mind, it washes all barriers away like a flash flood tearing through a dam.

Electricity dances across your skin and across your vision and then the world fills with light.
