The nature of these Vacalidians is simple: they are dead. In general, one may recognize a Vacalid by their pale, sometimes rotting flesh, but mostly by their vacant, empty eyes (there are exceptions). I haven't pieced together the entire history of this bizarre people, but it seems that most of them are available for summoning by casters who know the proper rituals. They live in a separate plain, where they live in a sort of "community", waiting for summoning. The Undead Vacalids In actuality, all of the Vacalids may be considered "undead" as they are the living dead, however I am suspect of the true nature of some of the higher beings, and others fit better under other categories. In any case, the undead comprise the majority of the Vacalids. These include such things as walking corpses (zombies), vampires, mummies, etc. All of these I have encountered display the "blank eye" symptom, that of lifeless, soulless bodies. Most of these can be very dangerous, carrying disease and also a ferocious tenacity in combat! The Elemental Vacalids The elemental vacalids form an interesting lot. They are very similar to the elementals which can be summoned through the 'summon elemental' spell, however they tend to be less corporeal. I have noticed that they spend a lot of time in their 'natural' form, although they do revert to a humanoid form occasionally. Fire elementals can hide inside a fire, giving a good attack advantage, and air elementals can hide as a faint breeze, coalescing to attack, etc. These elementals tend to display the same 'blank gaze' as their other compatriots. Spirit Vacalids I have discovered that the spirits (or 'ghosts') of people may become 'fear-its' through certain ways. Either through ritual preparation of the dead, or if one happens to die in their realm, the soul cannot escape and it becomes trapped there and transformed to Vacalidian nature. The spirits may retain basic emotional states of their former lives, but other than that, they retain no memories. The spirits will usually display a temperment based on the most prevelant of emotions of the former being, such as hate, love, sadness, etc. These too display the vacant darkness in the eyes. Dread Beings I have only seen one in my experiements, and it was indeed dread! In fact, I could barely contain it with in my summoning circle, so great was its power. It seems that the Vacalids have a semi-ordered structure (I say semi-ordered because there can be vying for positions through violence, so things continually change) in which the more Dread creatures attain a higher position. These creatures display the same vacant black-eye gaze, but they each have something distinct and unusual about them. The one I came into contact with gained power from absorbing the light in the room! Truly these beings are very dangerous. The Unspeakables I have, in my conjurings, heard rumors of the next to highest ranked beings, but noone will speak about them, thus I have termed them "the Unspeakables". All I can tell about these beings, is that there are three of them (sometimes referred to as "the Three") and that they have always retained their current position. Also I can discern that these support some sort of 'supreme' being (which see). I have no physical data to present on these elusive beings. The Supreme One This creature is talked about even less than the Unspeakables. In fact, I have only heard mention of him twice. One by a Dread being, and another time by a much lower minion, which summarily disintegrated. I have vague referrence that he is somehow linked to the Three, but the exact nature of this relation is unclear. However, due to the great power of the Dread beings, and the supposed greater power of the Three, I must assume that the Supreme One indeed deserves the title!
