INTRODUCTION Welcome to the world of the card game entitled Card Shot!, or CS! for short. In card shot, players assume the guises of different characters in a specific setting, battling to determine the winner. Best of all, CS! uses a standard Poker deck with two Jokers in it. You already have two, three or maybe even four of those kinds of decks lying around your house, so you've got the basic materials! ----------| 02. GAME PREPARATIONS In order for you to begin playing CS!, you will need the following items: - Two players - A standard Poker deck (with two Jokers) for each player - Printout of these rules (optional) - Character statistic printout Poker decks can be purchased at any local store, even gas stations. For the character statistic printout, you will have to have also downloaded the Character file for the particular setting. Currently, the only setting available for CS! is called "Madder", and is available for download from the link in the header of this file. Each player chooses a Character to play as (it's okay if two players choose the same Character). Each Character has his or her own unique abilities, attacks and suit. ----------| 03. GAME PLAY 03-01. Goal of CS!: The goal of CS! is to reduce your opponent's deck to 0 cards. This is accomplished by attacks during combat, and special abilities. If a player is reduced to 0 cards in his or her deck at any time, that player loses. 03-02. Card Explanations: There are three different card "types" in CS!. They are: [1] NUMBER CARD Number cards represent basic attacks in the game. For the purposes of CS!, number cards are represented by the cards 3 through 10. [2] SPECIAL CARD Special cards represent special abilities, power and attacks that are unique to the Character. For the purposes of CS!, special cards are represented by the cards Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Deuce (also know as the '2'). [3] JOKER Jokers have specific effects that alter the game. Their uses are explained later. 03-03. Starting the Game: Each player shuffles his or her deck, then allows the opposing player to cut it. Play a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors to see who goes first (also called the "Active Player"). In CS!, the turns happen simultaneously for both players. However, the "Active Player" performs his or her items first, the allows the next player to do his or her items. Once the turn is over, the opposing playing becomes the "Active Player". Play alternates like that until a winner has been determined. 03-04. Turn Sequence: Each turn of CS! is broken down into steps. Each player performs his or her items during that step. Only after each player agrees do both players move onto the next step. The turns in CS! are as follows: [1] Draw Step [2] Pre-Attack Step [3] Attack Step [4] Post-Attack Step [5] Discard Step DRAW STEP If a player has less than five cards in hand, he or she draws until he or she has five cards (if this is the first turn of the game, make sure you draw until you have five cards). This is also called your "Hand Size". Normally, both players' Hand Size is five. Some effects or abilities may modified a player's Hand Size. If you have a Joker in your hand after you have drawn cards for this step, you may discard it from your hand in order to draw two more cards. PRE-ATTACK STEP Some Character special abilities may be used during this step, and some effects may be executed. ATTACK-STEP During this step, players play number and special cards from their hands to attack each other. This step is covered in detail in section 04-01. POST-ATTACK STEP Some Character special abilities may be used during this step, and some effects may be activated. DISCARD PHASE If a player has more than five cards in his or her hand, that player chooses and discards until he or she has five cards in his or her hand. Each player may then discard one card from his or her hand. Repeat Steps 1-5 in this manner until a player wins. ----------| 04. COMBAT 04-01. Combat Sequence: [1] The Active Player chooses a card from his or her hand and places it face down in front of him or her. The opposing player then does the same. [2] Once both players have placed their cards in this way, the cards are then turned face up. [3] Compare the "values" of the two cards. The "Value" of a card is either its "Attack Value" or "Defense Value". On a Number card, its value is its number. For Special cards, if it lists an "Attack Value" then that is it's value. Some Special cards do effects instead. These have something called a "Defense Value" even though it doesn't expressly say so. Check the name of the card in the Setting File. If it lists a "/5" after the card name, then that is its Defense value. [4] Damage is done to the player of the lower value equal to the difference. If the player with the higher value is from a "Defense Value" card, then damage is not done to the player of the lower value, even if the Defense Value is higher. [5] If damage is done to a player, he or she may absorb the damage. PLAYING A CARD: A player MUST play a card during the Attack Step, if at all possible. If the card would normally not be part of combat or not affect it in any way, treat it as a unidentified card with no suit and a value of 0. If, for some reason, a player is unable to play a card (such as having no cards in his or her hand), treat it as if the player played an unidentified card with no suit and a value of 0. SAME SUIT BONUS: If a player plays a Number card as an attack and the suit of the card matches the Character suit, the value of that card is increased by +1, to a maximum total value of 10. 04-02. Damage Absorption If damage is done to you, here is your chance to reduce that damage by as much as you wish. Normally, each point of damage done to a player is the number of cards that are discarded from the top of his or her deck. However, this damage can be reduced. For each card that you discard from your hand, the damage is reduced on a 1-for-1 basis (i.e., if you discard two cards from your hand, then the damage is reduced by 2). In addition, if a card discarded in this way matches your Character's suit, the damage is reduced by 2 instead. For example, is your Character's suit is "Clubs", and you discard two Hearts and a Club in this way, the damage is reduced by 4. Some special cards can also be played during this step to further reduce the damage. If that Special card matches the Characters suit, it reduces the damage by +1, in addition to whatever the card prevents. Calculate the final damage done to a player after Damage Absorption. If the number is greater than 0, discard that number of cards from the player's deck, one at a time. If a Joker is placed into your discard pile in this way, the rest of the damage is prevented, and no more cards are discarded. If a player has no more cards left in his or her deck, he or she loses. NOTE: Whenever a card or ability does damage to a player, there is always a Damage Absorption step. ----------| 05. OTHER RULES 05-01. Golden Rule The Golden Rule is that whenever a card or ability breaks the rules contained in this document, the card or ability takes precedence. 05-02. A or B Some cards for Characters lists two effects in the card description. To use these abilities, you must place the cards in different positions. If you wish to use the first effect on the card, place the card vertically. If you wish to use the second effect, place the card horizontally. In this same way, you can "bluff" your opponent. You can play any card either vertically or horizontally if it has only one effect on the card. When the attacks are revealed, simply use the sole effect. 05-03. Damage versus Discarding Some card effects do damage; others discard cards from an opponent's deck. The difference between the two is that if a card does "damage", there is a Damage Absorption step that the player can use to reduce the damage. On the other hand, with "discarding", there is no Damage Absorption step. 05-04. Specific Combat Steps Due to the nature of some of the cards in CS!, values may be modified by a number of special effects. The Active Player's effects are executed first, then the opposing player's effects are completed. [1] Place attacks from hand. [2] Reveal attacks. [3] Do any effects that would modify the value of the attacks. [4] Compare the modified values. [5] Do any effects as a result of a player having a higher value. [6] Do damage. [7] Do any other effects of the attacks. 05-05. Contact Information The CS! home page URL is listed in the heading of this file, along with the e-mail address.
