The Hole DVD and Video Chart results in UK and The Hole rating change in Mexico
October 31, 2001
As you all know, The Hole was released on October 29 (this last Monday) and it is doing great on rentals!, Blockbuster UK lists it as being the number 3 DVD rented on the DVD rental chart and the number 4 VHS rented on the VHS rental chart!!!!!!!!! Keep renting The Hole if you are in the UK.
Continuing with The Hole news, today the film was suddenly changed from a "C" rating to a "B" rating in Mexico, I don't know why but this is great news because that way more people will get to see it. The "B" rating is equivalent to in between the "PG-13" and "R" rating in the US. Go see The Hole!!!
The Hole's box office results in Mexico, The Hole in Canada The HOLE GETS US DISTRIBUTION!!!! and my The Hole Review
October 30, 2001
First of all, here's a list of the places in Mexico in which the awesome psychological thriller "The Hole", Thora's latest, is currently being shown: Cuatitlan Izcalli, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Zapopan, Mexico D.F., Cuernavaca, Tijuana and Toluca. For listings please check your local newspaper or visit cinexperto.com .
Despite The Hole's "C" rating in Mexico, the fact that maybe not everyone knows about the film, and despite it is only being shown in about 7 states, the film did very good at the box office (considering what I just said) making 1,200,000 pesos (one peso is equivalent to about 9 US dollars if you would like to do the math :)), debuting in the 9th place at the box office, it actually made the same as "A Knight's Tale" this past weekend and it beat Jean Claude Van Damme's "Replicant". It has also been getting good reviews, a local newspaper calls it "a very good suspense movie that offers more than you would think it would".
Continuing with The Hole news, the film was actually also released in limited release in Canada, in states such as Toronto, this past weekend under an "AA" rating (which I think is similar to an "R" rating too), please check your local listings to see if the film is being shown in your area.
And continuing with EVEN MORE THE HOLE NEWS, upcomingmovies.com reports that Variety reported that The Hole was picked up by Dimension Films yesterday for US DISTRIBUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great news, huh?
And last but definitely not least, I finally saw The Hole this past weekend (I actually saw it twice) and here's my review, I avoided spoilers (there are NO SPOLIERS)so you could go blank into the movie when you see it:
The Hole is just an AWESOME thriller, I just loved it!!! Nick Hamm brings us a suspense thriller crafted with enormously talented performances by the cast led by Thora Birch, Desmond Harrington, Laurence Fox, Keira Knightley and Embeth Davidtz. Part of the film's result depended very much on Thora's character Liz, and Thora plays the part just PERFECTLY, with such depth and mistery, never revealing too much, just about enough to keep going and gradually letting us know who Liz really is, Thora's performance is the best performance in the film. It may very well be Thora's edgiest role, but she handles it wonderfully. The rest of the cast played their parts amazingly well too. Nick Hamm's direction brings style to the film, the editing makes the story active and interesting, and the chilling score by Clint Mansell is just brilliant. All of this together give as result an AMAZING film filled with creativity and originality. All these elements join the story succesfully. Thora's brit accent is just perfect, and contrary to what many believe, this film does not have anything even closely related to the Blair Witch (I've heard people saying it looked or wanted to be like the Blair Witch, which is totally wrong), The Hole is totally different and way better, telling a story which doesn't involve a teen psycho slicing up brainless teens nor a ghost story. It is instead a smart, hip movie with realism to the psychological suspense it portrays and treating a topic which may end up as or even more haunting than any crazy killer or any haunting ghost.
Overall, The Hole is a scary, realistic, surprising, sinister, tense, funny, original, innovative film which definitely deserves to be watched, so if you haven't watched The Hole, go see it!!!!!!! You will not regret it.
The Hole opens tomorrow in Mexico, new The Hole Pix and Voting Over
October 25, 2001
Yes, it's true, The Hole, Thora's latest, is opening all over the country (Mexico) tomorrow with a "C" rating (equivalent to an R rating or in between the R and NC-17 rating, it's sort of in the middle because I understand young people can see R movies with their parents, with the "C" rating, young people can't see the film not even with their parents). To celebrate it's release, I have added some new NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN by most people images of The Hole to the new "The Hole Gallery 4"!!!!!!!!! Visit THE HOLE GALLERY 4 FOR THE NEW THE HOLE PIX!!!!!!
On other news, the Second Annual Thora Birch News Awards: 2001 voting is finally over, please stay tuned for the date of the awards, which will be celebrated on a live chat this month, so stay tuned for the date, which will be announced SOON!!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK NOMINEES!!!!!!!!!
Thora's possible NEW FILM PROJECT, Ghost World Poster NOW AVAILABLE HERE, THE HOLE opened today in Mexico and GHOST WORLD DVD/Video RELEASE DATE!!!
October 19, 2001 Upcomingmovies.com reports that "Thora Birch, and Kirk Douglas had been in talks to star. (2/22/01)" in a possible remake of the film "The Night Of The Iguana", based upon the play by Tennessee Williams, which was previously adapted as a 1964 film starring Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, and Deborah Kerr, and directed by John Huston.
If the film gets made, it would be filmed in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (the original version was also filmed there), that would be great because I could go!!!!! hehe. "Production was expected to start sometime in the late summer of 2000 on a budget of $10 million in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico, but that apparently didn't happen. There's no word when filming might start now, if ever."
The only confirmed actor by now is Jeremy Irons, but this project has been in hold for a long time so there is no certainty in whether the film will actually be made and whether Thora will star or not, if she does take the role, she will play "Charlitte Goodall", here is a small summary of the plot:
"After he's defrocked following a sexual escapade with a young girl, the former Reverend Lawrence Shannon (Irons) hightails it to Mexico, where he becomes a tour guide. His old ways come taunting again when one of his customers is young Charlotte Goodall (Birch), a sex-crazy teenage girl with her eye on an older man. The story progresses from there...".
SPECIAL THANKS to Thora fan Wes for pointing this out.
On Ghost World news, the Ghost World Poster is NOW AVAILABLE at the Thora Poster Store here at the site!!!! Go buy it now!!!
Continuing, the Ghost World phenomenon has been featured in tons of magazine publications, some of which we have already mentioned, but here's a summary of the magazines that feature Ghost World and their respective comments thanks to the Fantagraphics e-mailer:
* The August 30th ONION featured a review of GHOST WORLD ("inspired and achingly
funny")
* The September 2001 PREMIERE includes a feature titled "Inside Ghost World,"
with several photos from the film and images from the book.
* The August 10th ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY ran a cover feature titled "AT LAST!
10 SUMMER MOVIES WORTH SEEING," which included Ghost World as one of these
10 films, as well as profiles of THORA BIRCH and SCARLETT JOHANSSON.
* The Sept. 2001 VANITY FAIR included a GHOST WORLD plug.
* The August 23rd VUE WEEKLY included a cover feature and interview with Dan
Clowes.
* The October 2001 BIZARRE magazine from the U.K. includes a half-page feature
on GW.
* The Sept/Oct FFWD reviews GHOST WORLD: A SCREENPLAY. "If you found yourself
squinting to read the labels on Steve Buscemi's record collection, you'll flip
your wig."
* The Sept. 28 COMICS BUYER'S GUIDE featured a charming review of GW by PETER
DAVID's teenaged daughter, GWEN. Gwen David praises Ghost World the film and
relates it to her own teen existence. She is most pleased that Ghost World
is one teen film that doesn't show teens as "a bunch of stupid idiots who are
too stoned to realize that there's more to life than sex, drugs, and rock and
roll."
Meanwhile, the Fantagraphics e-mailer also reports that the "DVD/Video release date for GHOST WORLD is currently slated for
Feb. 5th from MGM/UA"!!!!!!!!!!!!!. "Stay tuned for further details."
On "The Hole" news, the film actually OPENED TODAY in Monterrey, Mexico in one movie theater(unfortunately I don't live there), the reason it opened a week before is because the movie theater it is being shown in is new and distributors always provide new films to newly opened movie theaters before other theaters get them as a way of supporting and creating attention towards the new theater, if you live in Monterrey, please visit the Cinepolis website and look for The Hole's schedule, remember the film's name in spanish is "Atrapados". The film is scheduled to open next week all over the country (Mexico).
And last but not least, stay tuned to the site because the day of the Second Annual Thora Birch News Awards: 2001 will be announced RIGHT HERE SOON!!!!
A little correction about Thora's Deauville triumph, The Hole's definite release date in Mexico, Thora in magazines and events, a little problem, and more.
October 11, 2001
First of all I would like to apoligize for the lack of updates lately but please know that when there are no updates it is because I have are busy and that is the reason I haven't updated in the past couple of weeks, because I have been awfully, AWFULLY busy with tons and tons of school work, but anyways, my sincere apoligies.
I will start with some bad news this time, it turns out that due to the large amounts of downloads the site has been getting, we have been obligated to take a course of action in order to prevent the site from getting turned-off. After lots of thinking we came to the conclusion that since images are the largest files, we are closing some galleries each week to reduce the amount of downloads and so the site can keep running smoothly. If you have more doubts or want to see more info on this, please click here , if that page doesn't answer your questions or doubts, please e-mail me .
In MUCH BETTER news, remember Thora's Deauville Film Fest triumph? Well it turns out it was sort of a DOUBLE triumph, because, according to thora.org , Thora won "Best Actor" (prix d'interprétation), meaning she actually beat both her male and female competitors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CONGRATS THORA!!!!!!!!!!!!
On other GREAT news, a banner confirming The Hole's (Atrapados) definite release date (which can be seen above) was released by the Cinepolis website about a week ago. The banner confirms the film is being released in Mexico on October 26!!!!! And it doesn't even have that "release dates subject to change" note so it is definitely coming that day to Mexico!!!!
On related news, various mexican publications have talked about "The Hole", such publications include the free Cinepolis magazine publication "Estrenos" , which includes a full article with images describing the film's plot (the article lists the film's title in spanish as being "El Hoyo", the exact translation of "The Hole, and it lists the release date as September 28, which is obviously wrong now but it also proves that the film was first scheduled for a September 28 release). This mag also has a small article at the end recomending the film. The new issue of "Cine Premiere" also has a small article on the film, but it's not really very informative, it has an image also, there is also a little image of the poster which is actually a free pass to see the film in Cinemark theaters around the country (Mexico), and which confirms the film's distributor in Mexico is NU-VISION , but their site has nothing on The Hole yet. The new issue of Cinemania magazine also features 2 articles, one small one describing the film's plot and another 2 page article which includes various facts about the film and which is MUCH MORE informative than any other mexican published article, it even includes some little facts I had never heard before, so I will try to get permission to post it for you to read.
TV has also had its share of The Hole here in Mexico, a clip of the film (which was actually part of the trailer), was shown in a segment show called "24 por Segundo", which is about 1 minute long. They said that the film, which has become a cult movie according to them, and in which American Beauty's Thora Birch stars, is coming to Mexico soon.
Continuing with magazines, thora.org reports that there's an image of Thora in the October 5th issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine. And in case I hadn't mentioned this before, Thora attended the 5th Annual Hollywood Film Festival on August 6.
Well, that's about it for now, but don't forget more DVD captures are coming to the site SOON, so stay tuned!!!!!
