Visit the Miscellaneous Thora Pictures Gallery 5 for the 2 new images!!
All not forgotten:
I received The Hole poster by e-mail, and I have added it to the The Hole Gallery 3!!
Visit the The Hole Gallery 3 for the poster!!
Finally, I'd like to ask you to please keep voting on the webbieworld thing (above) and please register on the Message Board and start the chat!
Oh, also, the Chatroom is back up!!
THE HOLE box office report, GHOST WORLD confirmation, Message Board and Chatroom Stuff and Thora loves Armani!
April 24, 2001
Well, let's start with The Hole, it debuted on place 4 on the UK box-office!!!It actually made 673,777 pounds in it's first weekend and being shown in 322 screens on the UK. If you are one of the lucky ones who have seen "The Hole", please e-mail me your review, of course trying to keep it spoiler-free, however if it has spoilers, please notify it before (above) the review.
On Ghost World, Fantagraphics has confirmed the release date Upcomingmovies.com reported: August 3rd 2001!! That's a lot later than we thought it would be released but at least they have a confirmed release date, here's what fantagraphics reported on it's e-mailer: "Your not-so-humble spies from the FBI INFORMANT were in attendance earlier this month at the EGYPTIAN THEATER in Hollywood for an exclusive cast and crew screening of TERRY ZWIGOFF and DAN CLOWES' GHOST WORLD. The screening was a huge success, with a packed-house giving a raucous round of applause when the closing credits rolled. Spotted in attendance were CRISPIN GLOVER, JOHN C. REILLY, THORA BIRCH, LOS BROS HERNANDEZ, and dozens of other Hollywood scenesters, all of whom stuck around after the screening to swill liquor and talk about what geniuses CLOWES and ZWIGOFF are. CLOWES could be seen showing off his latest pride and joy, the L'IL ENID DOLL coming this summer from Tokyo's PRESSPOP GALLERY.
After much jostling and positive press screenings in the last month, the film has officially been scheduled for an AUGUST 3rd release. Because of the release date, Fantagraphics' edition of the GHOST WORLD SCREENPLAY is being delayed until then as well. We can't have people reading the screenplay before the book comes out, can we? That would be the biggest movie-themed comic book debacle since we learned that LUKE SKYWALKER and PRINCESS LEIA were actually brother and sister from reading the Marvel Comics adaptation of RETURN OF THE JEDI a week before the film's release in 1983. Damn you, Marvel! Bless you, Fantagraphics!"
They also mention the following:"
The latest issue of RESONANCE magazine, on stands now, includes a two-page feature on DAN CLOWES and the GHOST WORLD movie, as well as a rave review of JIMMY CORRIGAN." and this, on its "New Releases" section:"
GHOST WORLD (New Edition) By Daniel Clowes -- $9.95 -- Here it is, yet another NEW edition of the acclaimed GHOST WORLD to drive the collectors crazy. Featuring new covers by Clowes, which include the requisite "NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE" plug on the front cover, carefully designed to make us MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of dollars. Of course, the interior of the book still contains the same quiet masterpiece that has made this our bestselling book of all time. [BTW, stay tuned next month for the comic book adaptation of the GHOST WORLD film, written by LEN WEIN and illustrated by SAL BUSCEMA... Yes, that's a joke.]"
Also, I was watching E! Entertainment the other day and suddenly a commercial for a tv-show called Fashion File started, everything seemed normal until the narrator of the commercial said something about actresses that liked the designer Armani (about who the commercial was about) and after that, there she was, Thora! It was a really short clip of her saying she loved Armani but everything happenes so fast I can't remember her exact words, but it was her! She loves Armani! Obviously I mean his design, not the designer himself.
Finally, I visited the Message Board , which I hadn't visited in a while and found some messages I deleted because I thought they were disrespectful for Thora, please do not post messages like that, any other message considered inappropriate will be deleted and if the same user keeps posting the same or related stuff, he/she will be banned from using the message board . Also, you now have to register in order to post, but don't worry, it takes a minute or less! This is all for your best, on of the benefits is that if you register your name, nobody will be able to use it and you will be unique, it also provides a better way to organise the board and moderate it. To register, please go to the message board and click on the link above it (where it says "REGISTER", right next to "SEARCH").
Please register now and start the talk! and enjoy!!! You can form a great community, so go there and post often! Hope you all enjoy it, there's also some new features like getting a notification that you have been replied by e-mail and more, so go now, register and post!
Finally, about the chatroom, well there seems to be something wrong with it, it is unavailable at the moment so I will notify you when it gets fixed, it's probably something on nbci that's wrong, but I'm sure it will get fixed in a couple of days (I hope).
The Hole gets GREAT reviews, more Smokers Scoop, Ghost World release date (finally) and I finally found Itsy! MORE HOLE captures!!! And Webbieworld thing.
April 23, 2001
First of all, as said, The Hole got AWESOME reviews after it's release last Friday, it's getting pretty positive response from the audience and the critics are saying:"An effective enough chiller that prompts plenty of post credits contemplation." (EMPIRE), "Gripping, after a slightly risible set-up." (Financial Times - FT.COM), "Satisfyingly Chilly" (The Times), and also great comments on Thora like: "Birch, playing three variations on the same role, from wide-eyed awkward outsider to smirking, cold-eyed vamp, is perfectly cast" (Damien Love - The Scotsman - United Kingdom; Apr 19, 2001. Found at FT.COM).
To celebrate all this, I have added a third "The Hole" Gallery featuring 6 new captured from the music vide "We Luv You" (part of The Hole soundtrack).
Visit The Hole Gallery 3 for the 6 new images!!!
Also, we have some more Smokers Scoop, actually kind of disappointing: Thora is only in about 4 or 5 minutes of the movie!! She has a very small role in the film. Too bad :( Also, the film's actual title is only : "Smokers".
In Ghost World news, the film FINALLY GOT A RELEASE DATE, August 3rd 2001!!! This according to upcomingmovies.com . Reported by comics2film.com .
Oh, yes, I finally found Itsy Bitsy Spider! And while it is not 100% sure that Thora participated in the film, I will get it some time soon and let you know, the short-film is featured on a movie called "Bebe's Kids", I even found a great review on the short film! Which actually provides good info on the film. Here goes: "
— "ITSY BITSY SPIDER" is a short cartoon that precedes "Bebe's Kids," a hip cross between bug-killer TV ads and "The Terminator," as a Schwarzenegger-style exterminator goes after the title character in a piano teacher's home.
The attempts to eradicate the arachnid escalate to nuclear warfare in the ultimate cartoon spoof of the ridiculous levels of violence we see around us — both in entertainment and the real world.
It's also funnier and artfully says more in five minutes than "Bebe's Kids" manages in 74. The short, by the way, is rated PG."
By Chris Hicks
(Deseret News movie critic)

Finally, on the webbieworld thing, we were at one point in place 12! Then we went to place 24, and ended up on 22 this week. Please keep voting so we can get on this week's list (we are not in it yet). Thanks!!!
The Hole opens in UK tomorrow, new The Hole images, Thora Store update and more SMOKERS SCOOP!
April 19, 2001
Well, as we all know, The Hole opens on the UK tomorrow April 20 and I'd really like to have all fans who live there and go see it to e-mail me telling me your opinion, of course I would appreciate if you include NO SPOILERS please, just focus on what you think and on Thora's performance maybe, anyways, I'll be waiting for someone to tell me something about this EXTREMELY EXPECTED film.
To celebrate tomorrow's release, I have added 24 images to the The Hole Gallery, 20 are placed on the new The Hole Gallery 2. Those 20 are from the interview from theholethemovie.com , from which I must say I was impressed by Thora's british accent, it looks quite real! As if she was british. She had to learn the british accent in order to play Liz in The Hole because Liz is supposed to be british, and she handled it quite well. Remember the news about her moving to England, well if it was true (it was printed by Cine Premiere, a famous mexican movie-related magazine), it probably helped her, that is if she moved before making the film. The other 4 images are from the movie's teaser.
Anyways, Visit The Hole Gallery 1 and The Hole Gallery 2 for the 24 new images!!!!
In other news, I finally added the DnD DVD and two new Ghost World book editions (Screenplay and Film Edition) for PRE-ORDER at the Thora Store: In association with amazon.com , go PRE-ORDER them now!!!!
Also, I have added the teenwriters.net interview with Thora to the Articles And Transcripts section, check it out here!
Finally, we have MORE SMOKERS SCOOP!!! Here goes, straight from IPC: "The movie is currently
being distributed by MGM. We have not been given a release date as of yet.
It will go straight to video."
WAIT, THERE'S MORE, remember the film was first being distributed by Atmosphere Entertainment, well it still is, MGM'S only doing it on the USA (and we're still waiting): "As for the countries that Atmosphere has distributed to, the list continues
to grow. Most notably we have Spain, England, and several other smaller
countries. Japan, France, Germany are in final negotiations. What the
distributor does in their country with the film is up to them. We have no
control and pretty much no knowledge. They may never distribute it at all. (now that's bad news)
They only purchase the rights.
The rating, it is tentatively an "R" rating but we are waiting back
for the MPAA to give a final decision in writing so we can update the website."
We all are dying to see The Smokers, so in order for MGM to see we are EXTREMELY INTERESTED in seeing the film finally, - all of those who have already seen it (thanks to Atmosphere), please contact me to give me your opinion.- I have been suggested to e-mail MGM and ask them but I want to ask all of you to e-mail MGM too (I already have a couple of times)telling them we want to see the film, that way, they'll see the interest and release it, now I am not saying it WILL work but it's worth a try, so go ahead and e-mail MGM to this address and/or this address and ask them about The Smokers.
The more interest they see in the film, the quicker they
will release it.
Ghost World Quicktime Trailer's HERE! Along with captures! Some Ghost World News and Some Bad News :(
April 11, 2001
Well, yes, the Quicktime trailer for Ghost World is FINALLY here at Thora Birch News, at the Downloads section , go check it out!
There are also 24 NEW GHOST WORLD IMAGES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are all captures from the trailer and they are awesome, so, visit the Ghost World Gallery 2 now!!!
Continuing with Ghost World, the Fantagraphics e-mailer reports that there will be a cast and crew screening for Ghost World this week and that they'll be there, boy, they sure are lucky, but for us the unlucky, they promised to bring back a report (let's hope there's some pics as well).
The e-mailer also confirms that the Ghost World book (new) will be released soon.
On other Ghost World news, comics2film.com reports that Scarlett Johansson (Ghost World co-star) is in this month's Index Magazine, in which 8 pages are all about her and there's also extensive stuff on Dan Clowes (creator of Ghost World), in the magazine, *Johansson reports that she became pals with her co-star and on-screen friend Thora Birch. "We had some wacky, wacky times," the actress told Index. "We were sort of a team on that film. Because Terry Zwigoff and Dan Clowes are insane! Of course Thora is insane as well -- in a good way."* hehehehe.
Finally, the bad news, Thora Birch News is taking a vacation (be strong, we'll be back, but we need some rest), we'll probably start updating again either next week or the week after that, so, stay tuned because we have some great stuff coming but I don't want to say anything yet (hint: the words Thora, british, Dragons and Ghost are related).
Oh, wait, please keep voting on the Webbieworld thing, we are not on the list anymore :(, but if you keep voting, we will!
Ghost World Trailer Review, DnD news, The Brit Awards thingy I promised, LOADS of NEW IMAGES, and bad news :(
April 9, 2001
First of all, I'd like to say I'm really, really, REALLY tired, I added about 70 images, so please forgive any typing mistakes or anything, I will correct them (if any) in a future update).
Well, remember I promised to look back on the news at our news archive to see what happened on the Brit Awards, well, I finally did it, here goes what I wrote before:
"Well, changing topic, my friend told my she saw Thora on the Brit Awards(I unfortunately didn't) she said she was wearing black pants and presented an award with an old drunk guy who actually spilled his drink on the security guys saying "Why are you here anyway?"(this aren't the exact words he said, something like that). Can you believe it?? My friend said Thora just moved so she wouldn't have all the drink all over her."
Now, the Ghost World Trailer Review: The trailer, first of all, doesn't have great quality since it's a Windows Media Player file, it's even worse than "Real Player" quality, you can hear the whole trailer perfectly well, but you don't see anything, well, actually you see, but it's like they're showing you images, no movement, and sometimes the image seen is only the MPAA notice, luckily, after some viewings, I could see more and more of those "images" and Thora is practically in the whole trailer! From what I saw (or heard, I guess), the movie seems totally great, pretty funny and sarcastic, seems quite cool! There were a lot of cool lines like: "After about 5 minutes of this movie, you're gonna wish you had 10 beers!" (said by Thora's character Enid at the end of the trailer when she's asked if they sell beer, apparently Enid gets a job at a cinema), also, when Enid says:"Sometimes I think I might be going crazy from sexual frustration" and Becky replies: "You just hate every single guy in the face of the earth". Then Enid replies:"That's not true, I just hate all those... extroverted, seudobohemian losers!". Another thing I remember is when Enid is told she has been chosen for something and she replies:"So I have to take classes and stuff?". Also, in the beggining, there's like some guy dancing or something (I can't tell since there's no movement because of the bad quality of Windows Media Player)and Enid says:"That guy rules!" Finally, I love the "Yeah" she says almost at the end. All I can say is I can't wait for the movie and I can't wait for the Quicktime trailer (which there will hopefully be).
Continuing the movie subject, there's some bad news for non UK residents and good for UK residents, The Hole will be released there April 20, not USA, confirming what I suspected, this was confirmed at the IMDB. Well, UK people, please contact me when you see the movie to tell me your opinion so I can share it with all non UK residents.
Now, on to DnD, well, remember that "controversy" about DnD being demonic or something, well it got to Mexico, an article was posted on the newspaper saying religious people were saying DnD an The Exorcist (both currently being shown here in Mexico) were demonic and that they contributed to fear at nights and to hearing weird stuff, and, well, I think that's really, well, dumb, I mean, DnD is just dragons, it's an adventure, it's family material, I consider it absurd, maybe I consider it less absurd with The Exorcist because it treats more devil-related material but DnD, come on! Well, that's my opinion...
Also on DnD, well, it's not doing bad in Mexico, it's still in most theaters (there aren't many here) and usually when movies do bad, the next week they share time with another movie (2 movies shown on the same room on different hours), and that didn't happen with DnD so, great!
Final DnD note, I have some new images of DnD which I will scan soon, so stay tuned!
Finally, I have added 7 new images to the Miscellaneous Thora Pictures Gallery 4.
Visit Miscellaneous Thora Pictures Gallery 4 for the 7 new images!!!
Also, I have added a Heartbreakers Premiere Gallery featuring 3 new images!!
Visit the new Heartbreakers Premiere Gallery for the 3 new images!!!
I also added 4 images to a new gallery, the Oscars 2001 Gallery, confirming Thora did go to this year's ceremony, check out the guy she seems to be with, it's not Jason Priestley (is it?).
Visit the Thora Oscars 2001 Gallery for the 4 new images!!!
Finally on the images, I added 52 images distributed in 3 galleries for the Purple People Eater!!!!!
Visit the NEW Purple People Eater for the 52 NEW images!!!!!

The Hole and Ghost World Sites, DnD Day in Mexico, Ain't It Cool News?
April 3, 2001
Well, there's a couple of news I had forgotten to post. First of all, The Hole site has opened all of its sections plus some new ones, I noticed the "Production" section had a name change, it is now "Geek Stuff",it features interesting facts about the film's production and great comments on Thora! There's now also, the "Cast" section, which features 5 new Thora images from the film!!!! One of them shows Thora blonde, but quite different as she used to have it when she was younger, actually when she was younger it was brownish, but when she was little, she was blonde, anyways, that section also features an interview of Thora from the film which I have not yet seen but which I am sure will be great, the "Pictures" section has a ton of new images from Thora too!!! There's also a new "Feedback" section in which you can leave feedback (duh!), a "Cosmic Cupid" section which I am not sure what the purpose of that is, the "Multimedia" section now features a promo called "Grand Theft Auto - We Love U -" and 2 songs, "Always" from Dusted and "Show me the money" from The Architects, I haven't seen this either... In case you didn't know, there's also an html site for those who don't have flash but which only appears when the computer detects you don't have flash, the URL for that is http://www.theholethemovie.com/html_site/index.html . The HTML site still hasn't been updated with all those things from above, only the interview thing.
Visit theholethemovie.com for the updates!!!
Changing topics, actually, just film, well, the Ghost World site just doesn't get updated! We are all kind of waiting and eager to see more from this film and maybe this is why the people at MGM.COM have added a sub-site featuring new images of Thora in the film!!!!
Check that out here!!
Also on Ghost World, the people at Ain't it Cool News have seen the film already!! Boy, ain't they lucky? hehe, anyways, they posted a review on it which has a SPOILER WARNING, which is why I decided not to read it, even though curiosity almost made me read it, still, you can check it out here
Ending the Ghost World thing, I have added the poster to the Ghost World Gallery!!! The poster is quite cool and it reveals the tagline for the film: "Accentuate the negative", cool, huh?
Visit the Ghost World Gallery for the poster!!!
Finally, March 30 was DnD day in Mexico!!!! The film was finally released here in Mexico last Friday and I'll let you know how it's doing as time passes, I saw it again Saturday, Thora is just awesome!!! The latin america DnD site was finally opened too, it doesn't really have anything new but it's worth the visit even if you don't understand spanish, the design is cool too!!
Visit calabozosydragones.com, the latin america site for DND!!!
Oh, also, thanks to everyone who has been voting for us on the "Webbieworld" thing, thanks to you we are now in place 19 in the People's Pick, we are under the "Current Weekly Newcomer Site: The hottest new sites", and with your help, I'm sure we will do even better soon!!! So I ask you to please keep voting for us, you can vote daily, hehehe, oh, wait, I just re-checked the webbieworld site and we are now down to place 24, keep voting so we can go up, we were on 19 on Sunday.
