We flew over treetops...
Bounded more the like
On superhuman legs,
Through the bright night.
Stars glittered above,
A ghost cloud rolled by,
Partially covering Diana,
Her white glow pure and full.
Below us a dense forest lay
Trees of brilliant green made dark, almost gray
As the winds whipped around us, lending us speed.
Russell, I, Riss and Todd...
Nate and a precious few unknowns who came late to the party.
We ran that night,
Not in fear,
But hearts beating wildly with exhiliration.
Behind us we heard a faint whispering of voices.
The silent mindspeak of the vampires.
We knew they were following us,
But we were brave warriors preparing for a battle we knew we'd win.
We always do in these stories.
Landing among the great trunks
Darkest brown in the lateness of the hour,
We sprinted forward towards the lights.
In a clearing lay a house,
Simple and unassuming,
Modern and sterile.
What we had been searching for:
The house of the clan that followed,
Their whispers easier now to understand,
Space between us closing in.
Splitting up to search the area,
Riss and I walked the south side
Nate and Todd the north
While Russ ventured in.
A cracking of twigs nearby,
Our torches like sabers pierced the dark.
Only Nate and Todd
As surprised as we at the sight of each other.
They came from everywhere and nowhere.
Out from forest shadows,
Scraps of darkness taht light couldn't touch,
Stealing my friends into their lair,
As I cowered in the woods,
Helpless and scared.
Quickly I formulated an ill-conceived plan
And I raced towards the house,
Screams from my friends echoing in my ears,
Not quite as loudly as before.
Entering through the garage,
Into a hallway,
I ran the length of the house,
Whooping and yelling and causing chase.
I ran towards a barn nearby,
Jumping to the roof on powerful legs.
They followed, one by one,
And each one I slayed.
Cracking the necks of the women and men,
Inhuman monsters all the same.
They died with ease,
A scream and then silence and peace.
Then came their leader:
The Lord and Master,
King of all he surveyed.
He smiled at me wryly,
Took my hand and thanked me.
"They were useless brethen all.
Full of misguided whims and
Aimless
Petty torments.
Weak...futile...wouldn't last the millennium."
He looked into my eyes,
Smiled, and kissed me cordially.
"The house is yours now.
Do what you will."
Then he was gone,
A thief in the night.
My friends all unharmed,
We occupied the house.
Had parties,
Gala events,
Entertainment everlasting.
And then it was time to leave.
No more vampires to destroy,
We had no reason to stay
Together, or there,
It made little difference.
So we packed our belongings
And hugged our goodbyes.
Russell and I were the first to leave
The house in the night forest of silver and green.
I saw my car parked further down the drive
Near the woods I knew now so well.
I glanced at Russ with nothing left to say.
I saw the future
That night
Spread before me:
Each of us leaving in our own ways,
Far away from each other.
I saw myself driving
Through a night that would never end.
Silent as the grave I would never lie in.
