HAWAI'I (cont'd)

Kipahulu, or the seven sacred pools, in Mau'i.  The english name is comical...there are more than seven pools, and they are not sacred to Hawai'ians.  A beautiful place to camp on the Hana coast.

Lava flows from a lava tube (not visible) and into the ocean, kicking up steam and accompanied by a constant "hiss" as the molten rock is cooled by the ocean.  This lava is being put forth by Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world.  It has been continuously erupting for the last 15 years.

Yellow ginger, an introduced species from Asia.  Brought to Hawai'i because of it's beautiful smell.  It is now overunning native plants in the rainforest, and often occupies most of the understory.  Grows very fast and is very difficult to kill...even leaving the root allows the plant to regenerate.

This is a pu'u (Hawai'ian for hill) that is on the side of Mauna Loa, the largest (by volume) volcano in the world.  If you put your mouse on the image, you see where a lava flow has spilled over this pu'u, and down the side of the volcano.

Four trails of lava enter the ocean, colouring the steam red.
