Utila Island is a small island roughly
the size of Manhattan, with approximately 3000 permanent residents.
It is primarily a fishing village, but because of the excellent coral reefs
all around the island, it is well known for its scuba diving. It
is also known in back-packing circles as a great place for inexpensive
hotel rooms (most hotels run $3-5 per night) and food, a place where you
can spend a month for just a few hundred dollars US. Also, despite
the incredible dive sites, diving is also quite inexpensive, with $100
buying you 10 dives -- quite a bargain.

I know this one is a bit dark, but I thought it was a nice shot of some
palms and boats on the edge of the harbor.
This is a shot of one of the three "cinemas" on Utila. In the
absence of copyright law enforcement, they show video tapes on a large
screen tv, and charge a small admission fee (usually about 20 lempiras,
about $1.50 US) And yes, they sell popcorn!
A picture at just after dawn, looking towards the airport. Great
skies and always picturesque scenes here.
Well, that's a dolphin in front of the boat. This was taken after
2 dives on the east side of the island. We got back into the boat,
and a pod of dolphins passed us by. We started up the engines and
chased them, and they came back to us. They were jumping on the sides
and in front of the boat, and swimming just on the surface very close to
us. It was a great sight indeed!!
This is a shot out of the aircraft window, just before takeoff from
Utila to La Ceiba. Yes, those are waves. Yes, the aircraft
was no more than 10 feet from the water. No fences. Nothing
but a few rocks stopping you from going into the drink. Not so bad
for takeoff, but landing on this dirt strip was quite interesting...to
say the least!!
