TURTLE TRACKS
"MOJO'S TRACKS"
DAY ELEVEN:
Location: Mojo is in the same location as on day 9.
Habitat: He was on the surface and sitting in a form at the base of a 2" diameter American Holly tree. A form is a depression created by the turtle by using his feet, legs and shell to push the surrounding leaves and soil outward until he creates a shallow depression in which to rest. He was on the edge of a south facing old field that had many pockets of Blackberry, rose and thick mixed grasses. The nearby tree cover is mainly Poplar , Red Maple and American Holly with a ground cover and understory of Blackberry, Sumac, Sassafras and mixed grasses and Goldenrod.
Mojo was found resting in his form at the base of this holly tree.
As you can see in the below close up, Mojo's face was covered with sand which could have come from either the creation of the form or from foraging activity.
Day 11 stats
Date: 10-28-07
Location time: 2:30 pm.
Elevation:
Relative Humidity at soil level: 47.6% RH
Temperature at soil level: 71.7 F
Weather: Clear, sunny, freezing temperatures predicted overnight.
Winds: SW at 1-2 mph.
Barometric Pressure: 926.0 and falling.
I weighed Mojo and he has lost 10 grams of body weight since the last time he was weighed. This is probably because he may have stopped eating in responce to the cooler weather we have been having. Reptiles do not feed when the temperature drops to low for digestion. There is nothing worse than having your food rot in your stomach.
Check out the latest movie of Mojo's Tracks below. (Sorry no movie this time...he was in the same location as last time.)
