The Landing
as related by James B. Odell Sr. Sgt. USAAC
One of the Stories my father related to me was the night if the big crash. was flight of B-24s returning to the base in Bungay, England about 12 planes in all. It was foggy out as usual, and they had just been flown over by german bombers earier, so they could not turn on the runway torchs yet. The first plane in the flight had been badly damaged in the under fuslage area, unknown to the pilot the landing gear was damaged too. When they came into land the plane the landing gear crippled and the plane buckled, blocking the runway. Then the next plane in the flight crashed into it as soon as it landed. The third plane crashed before the tower could get response to the planes to redirect to another base.
The next few weeks, my dad's crew spent time repairing the damaged planes. A bombadeir, newly arrived from the States came into the hanger. He walked into the hanger and asked my dad, "Hey sarge what happened to that one." My dad answered "They got the outboard wing shot off over Magenburg, Germany, before returning home." "They do that often?" "Heck sometimes they fly back with one engine and the rudder shot off." The next thing my dad knew the new guy was passed out on the hanger deck. My dad said a couple of weeks later the story was in the Stars and Stripes paper.
After My dad moved into the nursing home when glocoma took his sight and Sundowners Diease took his mind. It was interesting if i arrived after 9am to see him, he would be in his own little world. It seemed he was back lost in a happier time, more or less in his own world, back during the war. His Mom and Dad was still alive and He had just gotten married before the war took him away, but his world was still back home waiting for him. What i found was pretty Interesting to me was i could ask him what planes had to be worked on today, he would go down a mental list of what was wronge with the planes, like he was looking out at the runway. I was able to live his life with him a little. He passed into the Wild blue yonder in april of 1999. HIs story still lives on here.
