Welcome to the War



My father James Burr Odell, JR. was one of the unknown hero's in the Second World War, Several times he tried to volunteer for the United States Navy but due to a injury as a kid, they wouldn't take him. As war with Germany broke out he was drafted into the Eight Army Air Corps.

His tour of duty started with 11 days of basic training followed by Engine school in Chanuet Field, Illinoise, and Keesler Field Mississippi, for avaition mechanical training. His Official title was Private first class, Propeller specialist but his friends still called him Digger Odell, after an undertaker in a 1930's radio show.

His first duty Station was in Cecil Field in Jacksonville Florida. Attached to a B-25 anti-Submarine squadron. In 1942 He Boarded a Steamer, a troop ship named the Susan B. Anthony, and headed for the real war in England, With the the 398 Bombardment Group, to a Base outside a small town called Bungie, England. He left his Wife, Corrine Margret Odell (and Small daugther, that was soon to come), back in Fort Pierce Fla. The stories He could tell about the early days of the Army Air Corps, and the war, But Thats Another time.
