Steve Meets The Challenge, Captures 1st Club Win

2004 Challenge Champion Steve HawleyTree Links from the tips, poison ivy lined holes carved through dense old growth forest, walking the steep fairways of Costin's Mountain, reaching the upper fairway of Art's Ulcer, it all adds up to the Challenge. Steve kept it in between the trees, birdied Art's Ulcer and posted the only sub-par score of the tournament (only the 2nd in the history of the event) and won the 2004 Challenge.

Steve has been very close in many tournaments including a second place finish in the 2003 Challenge and everyone is thankful the monkey is off his back. Tree Links is a great place to notch one's first club win. Steve has held the low handicap index in the club since joining back in 2000, but it is worth noting that he won this event as the low handicap, a rare feat that is rarely equalled. Shooting both low net and low gross happens now and then, but doing it as the low handicap is special. Congratulations Steve.

For the record, here are John's pre-round tournament odds.
Tree Links #14 courtesy of Scott K's unwavering devotion to digital photography SB: 2-1, 19 strokes? Are you kidding me? Solid favorite
SH: 4-1, 6 strokes above his last yr's handicap, starting to play better and has good course management which is so important on that course.
JMc: 5-1, Just came off a 77 at his old home track and this week hopes to net a 77, will it be enough?
SK: 7-1, Master of the short game and will need every bit of it with the tee's back, but he's no longer a short hitter
RJ: 8-1, Consistant off the tee's so if he can make a few putts and eliminate the 3 hole fog he'll contend with his 20 strokes
VR: 8-1, Could be the sleeper, he lives in Muirfield now so he better have a good game. Confidence in his putter could go a long way...along with a good cigar
TK: 10-1, Lack of rounds this year will play a major factor in Tom's game. Consistancy is hard enough but this course demands it
EH: 20-1 The Underdog...The Long Shot....Last Years @#$%^&& (no words can describe) But don't forget, 36 strokes and every reason for payback
