SHOPPING (1994)
MORGAN'S RATING
COMING SOON
Writer/Director Paul W.S. Anderson has created this story of a barren and anonymous city where the sport of choice is "shopping" -- a game in which stolen cars are driven through store windows where the participants loot as much as possible before the police arrive. For Tommy, it's a business, but for Billy & Jo, it's a labor of love. As the competition between Tommy and Billy grows more fierce, the stakes become higher and the "shopping" trips increasingly risky.

FACTS
RELEASE DATE: February 9th, 1996 (USA)
- In one scene, Billy and Jo talk about travelling while lying back in the remains of a car. This short scene took an extremely long time to shoot, because of two tramps who refused to move from the area and who kept shouting at one another. Once the tramps quietened down the crew had to contend with the deafening sound from a helicopter hovering above a nearby hospital.
- All actors had extensive training in stunt driving.
- The tattoo on Tommy's right arm means "robber".
QUOTES
Billy: I know my rights. I watch L.A. Law.
Police Inspector: Is that supposed to be funny?
Billy: No, more like a comedy-drama.
Billy: Oh shit, the police brought a fucking transit van to a car chase.
Billy: This is the 90s. Sex isn't safe any more.
Conwat: What has prison taught you, Billy?
CRITICAL COMMENTS
"While a lack of subtlety clouds his intentions, the director delivers a slick, diverting story that will probably be best remembered as Jude Law's first movie." -- Channel 4 Film
