SHANGHAI NOON (2000)
MORGAN'S RATING
Two cultures collide when East meets West in Shanghai Noon, a wildly hilarious, stunt-filled action-adventure comedy starring the death-defying action hero Jackie Chan. He plays Chinese Imperial Guard Chon Wang who hightails it to the wild and woolly West to rescue the beautiful kidnapped Princess Pei Pei. When he meets up with laid-back outlaw cowboy dude Roy O'Bannon -- the best mismatch ever made in the rough and tumble Old West -- the two face jail, brawls, bordellos and the vilest villains this side of the Great Wall! It's a real kick.

- The Chinese characters shown in the background during the opening credits are excerpts from a translation of "The Frog Prince."
- The name of Marshall Nathan Van Cleef is a homage to Lee Van Cleef who starred in many speghetti westerns.
- The catchy quote "I don't know karate, but I know crazy" is actually a line from a James Brown song.
-
Jackie Chan's character name is Chon Wang, which sounds just like "John Wayne".
- The song playing during the first bar-fight sequence is the same song that plays during the 'dirty dozen' style intro of the characters in
Armageddon (1998), an earlier Owen Wilson feature.
- Actress Brandon Merrill, who plays Chan's horse-riding Native American wife, is a real-life rodeo champion.
- Followed by a sequel:
Shanghai Knights (2003).
Roy O'Bannon: My name's Roy O'Bannon.
Chon Wang: Chon Wang.
Roy O'Bannon: "John Wayne"? That's a terrible cowboy name. That's not going to work. And neither is the ponytail.
Nathan Van Cleef: How about that? It's a Mexican standoff. Only we ain't got no Mexicans.
Roy O'Bannon: We're not pinatas, we're men!
Roy O'Bannon: I don't know Karate but I do know crazy, and I will use it.
Nathan Van Cleef: That's some nice hardware you got there.
Roy O'Bannon: Stop looking at my package you twisted son of a bitch.
Chon Wang: Fight for honor. You will win.
Lo Fong: One thing about the Chinese, Mr. Andrews. We do not renegotiate.
Chon Wang: You gave me bad directions!
Roy O'Bannon: No, I gave you wrong directions.
