CRITICAL COMMENTS
"It's all good fun, and classic Chan, although some elements probably don't sit as well with U.S. audiences as the homegrown fans." -- Nathan Shumate, Cold Fusion Video Reviews
"So, this ain't his best film, but you can't deny that he's an amazing performer, and the picture remains great entertainment." -- Kevin N. Laforest, Montreal Film Journal
FACTS
RELEASE DATE: 1985
-
Jackie Chan was hospitalized following the stunt where he flips over the balcony and crashes through the glass and light display, as he was not breathing.  He also sustained burns on his hands during the pole slide scene in the mall. The Christmas true lights were plugged into the wall instead of a low-voltage car battery.
- The mall pole slide also nearly paralyzed Chan after nearly breaking the seventh and eighth verebrate in his spine. He also dislocated his pelvis doing it (something hadn't previously known was possible).
- The producers used stunt "sugar glass" twice as thick as ordinary glass for greater realism. Unfortunately, this also led to a higher injury rate among stuntpeople.
- This film project came about as a result of
Jackie Chan's frustration and dissatisfaction with the film The Protector (1985).
- So much glass was used that the crew began calling the movie "Glass Story".
- The reason why this film had such a plain name was because every time Chan started a new project in Hong Kong, everyone else followed. For example, when
Drunken Master was announced, every filmmaker started making drunken boxing movies. With this film, no one knew what to expect, except at police film, and at that time in Hong Kong cinema, no one had ever made a Kung Fu police film before.
- Followed by three sequels:
Police Story 2 (1987), Police Story III: Supercop (1992) and Police Story IV: First Strike (1996).
"This is a must see for anyone who is vaguely interested in Jackie Chan or who has ever wondered why martial art movies are so popular in the east." -- Rory Slaney, Edinburgh U Film Society
