This EV based system is owned by Terry Gesualdo of California (like no one knows who I am), and brings newer ultra-fi methodes together with these vintage EV drivers. |
Since these speakers are discribed in detail in other places on this site I will discribe some of the ideas behind some of the features. First why so many drivers? For several reasons, impedence matching to the little SET amplifier for which I was making these speakers, also for efficiency, and finally the top drivers are for soundstage properties. The third reason the top firing SP12B I wasn't expecting to work as well as it does, it really adds a room presense of the music that is difficult to discribe. It does not surprisingly reduce the focus of the instruments on the sound stage, instead it adds room ambiance, like you are right there in the audience. I imagine like a rear firing tweeter. My system consists of an Ah! Tjoeb 99 CD player feeding a Decware Zen SE84B (3 watt SET amp with this impedence) power amplifier, I use braided CAT5, and magnet wire for speaker cables, and various home brewed interconnects. |
Each speaker contains two 12trxb's, and one top firing SP12B. The cabinet is a folded Voight Pipe eight feet long. The black speakers in the photo are Klipsch KLF-20's. |
In Blair's first system on the main level of his home he has two EV 12trxb's in bass reflex cabinets fed by a Onkyo reciever. Although this system is very simple in some regards, Blair says it has surprising fidelity for what he is using for the electronics. He hopes to aquire a tube amp for this system soon. I would suggest a older EV tube amp, but then I am biased. |

Blair Hansen's Two Systems |
Blair second system utilizes two Allied Radio speakers which are the older stamped steel framed EV 12trzb's, that EV made for Allied. Blair uses these in open baffles set atop two bass horns. As Blair says, "flat frequency response is not necessarily what this system is all about. It is about making a big sound. Going from little to big, and back again effortlessly. Rich (bloomy, I guess) midrange detail. Depth, warmth and some speed, something like live music itself........the speakers are especially good, I thnk with dynamic classical material. On all the stuff I play they are always great fun. Blair is using a Teres Turntable, a dynavectro 20X-TL, a Sony ES9000 for digital, a Cary SL98 preamplifier, and Cary 300B Signature mono block power amplifiers. For speaker cables he uses solid silver whererver he can get away with it. Here is what Blair says convince him to try open baffles, " Prior to gettting my EV 12trxb's in their current bass reflex cabinets, I had spent time with the cast aluminum frame pair of 12trxb's listening to the drivers simply sitting on the floor aimed in my genera direction, and sitting on a mantlepiece aimed up at the ceiling. It was suprising how compelling these these sounded out of cabinets. Not much bass, but the openess in the midrange was/is always compelling." Blair says that his bass bins and Allied Radio12trxb's are wired in series, with no crossover, he tuned a mechnical crossover by trimming the open baffle size down until they integrated well together. |
