In one dark night, of 11th year of Meiji Era, Saitou Hajime encounters a vampire in a dark alleyway. He is bitten on the neck by this dark stranger.
"Hn," is his response to the attack. He grabs hold of the offender by the collar. The offender finds himself on the floor, wondering what has just happened.
"I found a stake in my pocket," Saitou helpfully explains. The vampire looks down. Indeed, there is a stake through his heart.
He feels somehow wronged, which is understandable as 'normal' people do not carry stakes in their pocket, and remarks bitterly, "How convenient."
"Hn," Saitou's response does not change.
To Saitou, who is wiping his neck with a handkerchief-as if it has been contaminated-the dying vampire coldly makes a point, "Don't 'Hn,' me! I bit you, remember? You will have to do the same to survive," and ends it with one of those villain's evil laughter.
Saitou gives him a look. Not one of those stares which make you feel uneasy, but just a short glance. He approaches the vampire, grabs hold of the stake and pulls it out. The vampire screams in agony, but he seems oblivious to this and inspects the stake carefully. Then, in one sweeping movement, he puts it back into the place-very firmly.
"No one tells me what to do," with that, he turns around and walks away. 'Bastard' is the word which comes into the vampire's mind just before he draws his final breath.
Saitou arrives at the police station the next day. He feels drowsy. His limbs are quite hard to move and his head feels funny. All morning he could not concentrate on his work. He leans back on his chair in resigned manner and takes out a cigarette.
"Say, you drunk or something?"
Chou looks amusedly at him, and Saitou gives him a cold look. Suddenly, he sits up straight. His expression becomes peculiar. Now he is giving Chou a full stare. Chou feels uneasiness creeping up. Not one of usual kind, but more strange, disturbing yet sensual uneasiness. This uneasiness heightens as Saitou stands up and starts to approach him. Finding he cannot back away, Chou panics. He can feel his throat closing. This makes him panic even more. He grips on to his paperwork for support and holds it in front of him, hoping it might help.
"Damn."
"Huh?" Chou opens his eyes-which was tightly shut for some incomprehensible reason. Saitou has stopped abruptly in front of him. He turns around, goes back to his place and sits down on his chair, and lights the cigarette in his hand. Chou stares at him. Saitou takes a drag and Chou stares at him. Exhaling fair amount of smoke, Saitou frowns at still staring Chou.
"It is not polite to stare."
"What did you do just then!?"
Finding that he can speak now, Chou bursts out. Saitou's frown becomes more heavier, "What are you talking about?"
"You just hypnotized me, right? You learned how to do it and tried it on me, didn't you?" this accusation only makes Saitou give him a very amused glance and grin a very amused grin. Chou opens his mouth to say something in protest, checks himself and clamps it shut. That was far too weird for words. Fancy that, a hypnotist as well as all the other things he is. Shaking his head, he turns back to flicking through his now crumpled paperwork. Saitou regards him for a few more seconds thoughtfully and also turns back to his work-but suddenly stands up again. Chou jumps up, visibly disturbed.
"What? What?"
"I'm going out," and he is gone. Just like that.
Saitou Hajime is a man who knows. Amongst other things he knows what he wants and the means of obtaining what he wants. Amongst other things he wants, he wants a virgin in white. No, he needs a virgin in white. And he knows where to find one.
