My restoration part II
Ok, so there was some playfield wear that needed to be dealt
with, but before stripping the machine apart I would make sure that everything
worked. Below are a lowdown of what was fixed and how:
Pharaoh boots up
in auditsmode - Ok, better than nothing, and far betting that not
booting at all. Turns out that the batteries are completely dead. After
replacing all 3,the pin seems to boot up OK.
Pharaoh boots up
in auditsmode - What?? Batteri replacement was apparently not enough.
Resoldering the whole battery area fixed the problem.
Lower kickouthole
not responding - When ball enters the lower kickout hole nothing happens.
I noticed that no points where awarded, so a simple re-adjustment of the
switch cured the problem. Far easier that replacing transistors
and such....
Two droptargets not
responding - On the upperplayfield 2 droptargets didn't react when
hit. Lifting the playfield revealed that their diodes had come loose due
to years of abuse. Resoldering these fixed this.
Bell not ringing
- This was one of those thing that stares at your face, but your looking
to hard. And since I coulnd't find the source of the problem I left it
alone for a while and returned the day after. Knowing that there was a
working bell in my Taxi pinball, I took a look at this and here I found
my answer. The hammer mechanism and corresponding switch assembly had
been mangled together, so the switch was not making contact between its
leafs. So no current could get to the hammer. So after dismangling the
two it worked. Horray, now the (annoying) bell works.
Upper slingshot very
weak - Upper sling was acting very weak and didn't hit the ball particular
hard. Replacing the capcitor (2200 ufd, 100V) and resistor 100 ohm as
recommended on www.marvin3m.com made the slingshot come back to life.
After all this
was fixed the following has also been done:
- Installed new flippercoils and coilsleeves
- Cleaning and reassembing all kicker assemblies.
- All bulbs cleaned and dead ones replaced with new #47's
- All plastics removed and cleaned with Novus #1
- Playfield stripped, touchups made where appropriate. Given laquer
to protect from further wear.
- Playfield cleaned with Novus #2, and here after given 3-4 coats of
caranuba based wax.
- Replaced connector for GI relay on backbox. Light was sometimes dim,
due to a bad connection.
After all this Pharaoh showed its gratitude, and plays like a pin should:
Fast and funny.
Check out there results under th playfield pictures
section.
Minor things
that still needs tlc:
- Backglass given a coat of acyrlic lacquer to prevent flaking.
- Replacing capacitors on soundboard to eliminating humming.
- Cleaning and waxing cabinet. Buttons already replaced.
