Three Questions

Forrest Gump died and went to heaven. When he got to the Pearly Gates, Saint Peter told him that new rules were in effect. In order to gain admittance a prospective Heavenly Soul must answer three questions:

1) Name two days of the week that begin with "T."
2) How many seconds are in a year?
3) What is God's first name?

Forrest Gump thought for a few minutes and answered...

"1) The two days of the week that begin with "T" are Today and Tomorrow."
"2) There are 12 seconds in a year."
"3) God has two first names, and they are 'Andy' and 'Howard.'"

Saint Peter said, "OK, I'll buy Today and Tomorrow, even though it's not the answer I expected. But how did you get 12 seconds in a year, and why do you think God's first name is either Andy or Howard?"

Forrest Gump answered, "Well, there's January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd, April 2nd, etc."

"OK, I'll give you that one, too. But what about God's first name?"

And Forrest Gump said, "Well, it's from the song, 'Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me, Andy tells me I am his own.' And also from the prayer, 'Our Father, who art in Heaven, Howard be thy name.'"

Saint Peter just shook his head and opened the gate.

THE QUIZ

Now I see why powerful people often wear sunglasses. The spotlight blinds them to reality. They suffer from a delusion that power means something. They suffer from the misconception that titles make a difference. They are under the impression that earthly authority will make a heavenly difference.

Take this quiz.

* Name the ten wealthiest people in the world.
* Name the last ten Heisman trophy winners.
* Name the last ten winners of the Miss America contest.
* Name eight people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer prize.
* How about the last ten Academy Award winners for best picture, or * The last decade's worth of World Series winners?

How did you do? I didn't do well either. With the exception of you trivia hounds, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday too well.

Surprising how quickly we forget, isn't it? And what I've mentioned above are no second-rate achievements. These are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

* Think of three people you enjoy spending time with.
* Name ten people who have taught you something worthwhile.
* Name five friends who have helped you in a difficult time.
* List a few teachers who have aided your journey through school.
* Name half-a-dozen heroes whose stories have inspired you.

Easier? It was for me, too. The lesson? The people who make a difference are not the ones with the credentials, but the ones with the concern.

What is a teenager?

A teenager is.... a person who can't remember to walk the dog but never forgets a phone number......a weight watcher who goes on a diet by giving up candy bars before breakfast.....a youngster who receives her allowance on Monday, spends it on Tuesday, and borrows it from her best friend on Wednesday...someone who can hear his favorite singer 3 blocks away but not his mother calling from the next room.....a whiz who can operate the latest computer without a lesson but can't make a bed....a student who spends 12 minutes studying history and 12 hours studying for her driver's license.....a connoisseur of 2 kinds of fine music--loud and very loud....an enthusiast who has the energy to bike for miles but is usually too tired to dry the dishes....a young woman who loves the cat and tolerates the brother.....a romantic who never falls in love more than once a week....a budding beauty who never smiles until her braces come off....a boy who can sleep till noon on any Saturday he suspects the lawn needs mowing...an original thinker who is positive that her mother was never a teenager.

SMILE

It hurts to love someone and not be loved in return, But what is more painful is to love someone and never find the courage to let that person know how you feel. Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one so that when we finally meet the right person, we will know how to be grateful for that gift. Love is when you take away the feeling, the passion, and the romance in a relationship and find out you still care for that person. A sad thing in life is when you meet someone who means a lot to you, only to find out in the end that it was never meant to be and you just have to let go. The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch swing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you've ever had. It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives. Giving someone all your love is never assurance that they'll love you back! Don't expect love in return; just wait for it to grow in their heart but if it doesn't, be content it grew in yours. There are things you'd love to hear that you would never hear from the person whom you would like to hear it from, but don't be so deaf as not to hear it from the one who says it from his heart. Never say good-bye if you still want to try-never give up if you still feel you can go on-never say you don't love a person anymore if you can't let go. Love comes to those who still hope although they've been disappointed, to those who still believe although they've been betrayed, to those who still need love although they've been hurt before, and to those who have the courage and faith to build up trust again. It takes only a minute to get a crush on someone, an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone-but it takes a lifetime to forget someone. Don't go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them up from your dreams and hug them for real! Hope you dream of that special someone. Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do. Always put yourself in the other's shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the person too. A careless word may kindle strife; a cruel word may wreck a life; a timely word may level stress; a loving word may heal and bless. The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness lies for those who cry, those who hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tried for only they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives. Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss, ends with a tear. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past, you can't go on well in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you're the one smiling and everyone around you is crying.

Slow Dance

Have you ever watched kids On a merry-go-round? Or listened to the rain Slapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight? Or gazed at the sun into the fading night? You better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last. Do you run through each day On the fly? When you ask "How are you?" Do you hear the reply? When the day is done, Do you lie in your bed With the next hundred chores Running through your head? You'd better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last. Ever told your child, We'll do it tomorro! w? And in your haste, Not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch, Let a good friendship die 'Cause you never had time To call and say "Hi"? You'd better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last. When you run so fast to get somewhere You miss half the fun of getting there. When you worry and hurry through your day, It is like an unopened gift.... Thrown away. Life is not a race. Do take it slower Hear the music Before the song is over.

The Story Of the Butterfly

One day as mall opening appeared on a cocoon. A man sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making progress. It appeared to have gotten as far as it could go and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that any moment the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It was never able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening, were God's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into the wings so it would be ready for flight once it achieved freedom from th cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any obstacles, it would ripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. We could never fly.

The Jar

One day an expert in time management was speaking to a group of business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration those students will never forget. As he stood in front of the group of high-powered over achievers he said, "Okay, time for a quiz."

Then he pulled out a one-gallon, wide-mouthed Mason jar and set it on the table in front of him. Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, "Is this jar full?"

Everyone in the class said, "Yes."

Then he said, "Really?" He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. Then he dumped some gravel in and shook the jar causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the space between the big rocks. Then, he asked the group once more, "Is the jar full?"

By this time the class was on to him. "Probably not," one of them answered.

"Good!" he replied. He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all of the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, "Is this jar full?"

No!" the class shouted. Once again he said, "Good." Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and asked, "What is the point of this illustration?"

One eager beaver raised his hand and said, "The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things in it!"

"No," the speaker replied, "That's not the point. The truth this illustration teaches us is: If you don't put the big rocks in first, you'll never get them in at all. " What are the 'big rocks' in your life? Your children; Your loved ones; Your education; Your dreams; A worthy cause; Teaching or mentoring others; Doing things that you love; Time for yourself; Your health; Your significant other. Remember to put these BIG ROCKS in first or you'll never get them in at all.

If you sweat the little stuff (the gravel, the sand) then you'll fill your life with little things you worry about that don't really matter, and you'll never have the real quality time you need to spend on the big, important stuff (the big rocks). So, tonight, or in the morning, when you are reflecting on this short story, ask yourself this question: What are the 'big rocks' in my life? Then, put those in your jar first.
