Spirit and Opportunity are finding more signs of water in Mars' past. Their initial mission was 3 months long and was completed in April. They are currently in their 8th month of exploration. Cosmos 1, a solar sail spacecraft, is nearing completion for launch aboard a Russinan Volna rocket. It will be launched from a submarine in the Barents Sea. This mission hopes to perform the first controlled solar sail flight. The idea holds that solar sails would propel vehicles in space much as wind sails propel a boat. Solar sails, as the name suggests, would be driven by solar energy particles. This would reduce the need for fuel and thus decrease the weight of the spacecraft. The Perseid meteor shower was as active as in previous years. The new moon this year helped with the observations by giving us dark skies. The meteors come from particles shed by Comet 109P/Swift- Tuttle in 1862. The Messenger spacecraft to explore Mercury was launched on August 3. Messenger will take 7 years to reach Mercury because of the different orbital speeds between Earth and Mercury. The spacecraft will use gravity to slow it down to match Mercury's speed. It would take more fuel to go there directly and use rocket burns to slow it down. More fuel means more weight and fewer experiments, so for science's sake it will take the longer course. Lt.(jg) T'Plon USS St George NCC-63541 Chief Science Officer Dif-tor heh smusma Live long and prosper. ***** Engineering Department for Aug 2004 Hello folks, It's been pretty quiet here this month in Engineering. (Except for the incessant barking of the four dogs that I'm forced to live with) There was a slight adjustment needed with the warp plasma relay panel. We had to install a new one overnight. Good thing it didn't burst or there would have been some serious problems. Now that school is back in session, and I'm once again working two jobs...things are quiet on the ol' computer front. Bye for now. Fleet Captain Ken Oziah Chief Engineer USS Saint George ****** Charity Department Report Charity department has also been a bit slow this month, but the following crew members reported in with their charitable activities for the month of August: Lt John Schulte: Sent out $650.58 in Food coupons and $1921.19 in non food coupons for a total of $2,571.77 for the month. He also went to three Boy Scout meetings for about 5 hours of scout donated time as Treasurer. LTCdr Tom Schulte: Reported purchasing a video for the local library. No other crew members reported in for their charitable activities for August. However there was an interesting post on the Fleet list for Region 5's OCP challenge. I will try and keep everyone updated on this as things progress. In the mean time. PLEASE get the scissors out and clip those coupons sitting in your Sunday papers. If you don't get the Sunday paper regularly, it can be delivered or better yet I am sure they are available a the local convenience store. My convince store gives me left over coupons since they know I send them overseas. Region 5 Post following: From: "USS Horizon (Eddie Allen)"To: "Starfleet Discussion List" Date: Sun, 29 Aug 2004 13:42:43 -0500 Subject: [SFI] OCP Challenge may be coming from R5 Rumor has it that a contest is brewing in Region 5 for donations to OCP. The program really loves a good contest. Good luck to all of the Region 5 chapters and to all of the Starfleet donors in general. I have another piece of breaking news for Starfleet, however! For the first time in the history of the program, Starfleet is not the leader in coupon donations. I cannot believe it! but the rest of the world has caught up. Organizations are $2,000 ahead of Starfleet by themselves but if you add in Individuals they are almost $100,000 ahead and climbing. Starfleet has never been beaten in the history of this program for coupon donations. It will be interesting to see how things progress throughout the fall. Starfleet may be down but I cannot believe they are out of the race. A 12 year continuous string of victories is on the line... see www.ocpnet.org for more info eddie allen ocp@mchsi.com (OCP) usshorizon@mchsi.com (Star Trek) LT John Schulte Charity Officer/Transporter Division Chief, Engineering Department USS Saint George NCC-63541 Community Service Region 6 Award for 2003 Marine Corp Reserve Officer 6th Batallion Legion of Arms Award Shield Of Valor (a.k.a. Please send your donation counts to us on the St George and we will record them as we have in the past. If you have any questions please e-mail me at starfleetofficer2@yahoo.com.
