The Steelers had their last kick at the preseason can, and came away 38-24 winners. The starters seemed to be in regular season form in their limited action, and seemed primed and ready for Baltimore.
The defence limited the Panthers to only 83 yards on the ground, which was very refreshing to see. Our previous opponents seemed to be able to run at will.
The biggest winner on this evening was Pete Gonzalez. His performance in the fourth quarter won him a job on the 53 man roster. He was 8-10 passing for 110 yards and a touchdown. This had to leave Mike Quinn very disappointed after being World League M.V.P.
The performance and work ethic of Gonzalez left the Steelers little choice. He was definitely the fan favorite, and the choice made a lot of people from Pittsburgh very happy. This was the underdog story from training camp, and we can be sure to hear alot about it from the media in the coming week.
Congratulations Pete! And good luck in the future.
The other 2 people who will sleep a little easier tonight are Jamaine Stephens and Paul Wiggens. I'm glad both of these young men are still with us. Another year of development, and both of these guys can be quality starters for us next year.
The other big surprise was trading Steven Conley to the Colts for an undisclosed draft choice. Iv'e learned in the past not to question the moves the front office makes. Hopefully we get a second rounder for him.
Preseason is finally done! I'm getting pumped for the Ravens game. Man for man, this game should be no contest. I think the only thing that could possibly stop us is the momentum created by opening a new stadium. This is bad luck as far as scheduling is concerned. The soothing thought is that we know a Cowher coached team will be more than ready to face the task.
