Preseason is a funny thing.
Last week, we lost to the Eagles, but left the game feeling like it was a victory. Saturday night the Steelers downed the Falcons 28-22, but walked away feeling like losers.
It just goes to show how little substance can be put into the exhibition games. Saturday night was a brutal showing by our first string defense. Maybe they are getting a little bored by the meaningless games. Whatever the problem was, Bill Cowher was none too impressed. I would loved to have been a fly on the wall for his halftime pep talk. I'm sure their was enough spittle for all involved.
But, as always, there was some good things to take home with the team. Kordell was outstanding in the 2 minute drill. He directed an 8 play 64 yard drive with only 1:39 remaining in the first half. It culminated with a 1 yard touchdown pass to Breuner, with only 6 ticks left on the clock.
Richard Huntley and Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala, both had marvelous games filling in for Bettis. Coach Cowher will have a hard time deciding on the winner of that job. George Jones has also played well when given the chance.
Alan Faneca continued to impress. I think he will be a starter before week 6. Jamaine Stephens also had a better day, although not outstanding. He got his chance again when Chris Conrad hurt his knee early in the contest.
There is one more of these frivolous games before the team gets down to the real business. When we play Carolina, we will be down to only 60 players. The team still wont put too much importance on that game, but it will be life or death for the 7 players left to be cut. This is the type of game where we should get some inclination on what to expect for the coming year.
Overall, the preseason has gone pretty well. The main thing to hope for, is to get to week 1 healthy. Apart from Henry Bailey, this has been accomplished.
Hopefully Greg Lloyd lost the chip on his shoulder.
