Basket Case 2 Review
By Adapadz
Frank Henenlotter's ‘Basket Case 2’ picks up right where the original BASKET CASE leaves off. After surviving the fall from their hotel room window, Duane Bradley and his basket-dwelling brother Belial are back causing havoc and making new friends. After there fall from the hotel room they are taken to the hospital and have now become celebrities. They quickly escape and bump into a mysterious old woman who claims to know there aunt, they trust her and flee the scene – now with a $1 million reward on there heads. The old lady is granny Ruth an old writer who shelters the freaks in her home for protection from the outside world who now wants the twins to live with her. Duane though is having trouble fitting in and coping with the relationship his brother is having with a fellow mutant called Eve. Also a snoopy nosed reporter finds out about the house and goes about exposing granny Ruth’s inmates and catching the infamous Bradley twins.

Ok, I have a strange obsession with dodgy sequels. I find follow on stories interesting and always wonder how writers go around following stories on just because a studio knows the film will make money because of its predecessor. I’m sure this film didn’t rake in the money but was popular enough to warrant a follow up, and its an enjoyable add on to the original. This film works quite well as its more a dark comedy unlike the original which is a gritty hand held horror. This film has effects (ok so some are pants) but it also has quite a cool little plot and some interesting characters.

My favourite character is the old man who owns a really shitty freak show that just consists of monsters he’s made from chicken wire and plastercine. He is cool but only in the film for less than 10 minutes. I want a full film of that guy. It would rock.

The problem I try to overlook is that the first film is so blatently the early 80’s then it cuts to modern day 90’s. Over 8 years has passed in one night, wow how amazing nobody noticed. And how is the little stumpy shit Belial so strong? He throws grown men around like nobody’s fool. Anyway watch this classic sequel – it could be worse, it could be Highlander 2; The Quickening! Oh Christ.
A classic Padz favourite.
