FUDHOH: THE NEW GENERATION DVD Review By Yodasnoog |
FILM: When Riki Fudoh was a child he witnessed his father decapitate his older brother while he slept. The reason for this was as a peace offering, his brother had caused problems among the other Yakuza and this was what had to be done to stop further problems. This moment made a huge impact on the rest of Riki’s life, as we soon find out. Now in his late teens, and well respected in high school, he has put together his own band of yakuza. And they are quickly taking out the head Yakuza who were responsible for ordering his brothers death. Among the gang members are two hitmen who are about 7 years old. Two schoolgirl assasins (one of which fires darts out of her vagina) and to top it off, a 7 foot biker with, as one guy says, an “elephantine prick” and immense strength. We first see how powerful Riki has become when his teacher, who is brutal towards the other students, gets down on his hands and knees and begs Riki to wait a little longer for the money he owes him. Now come on, in high school, we all would’ve loved to be like Riki Fudoh. Another Takashi Miike classic here, and once again another of his V-Cinema realeases (straight to video in Japan). This is a refreshing take on the Yakuza genre, with the disaffected youth taking the place of cool guys in suits, and it’s very fun indeed. You’ve got all you could ever need here, hermaphrodites, darts fired from vaginas, decapitations, black comedy and that bad ass of V-Cinema Riki Takeuchi, in a small role as a Yakuza boss. If I had a choice, I would’ve loved his role to have been bigger here, but you can’t have everything. Although I did find the film a little slow at times, it’s still a fun experience with some really nice little touches (tattoo inked from blood for example). Shosuke Tanihara who plays Riki Fudoh is especially good here, he has this kind of calm cool which just makes you root for him all the more, and he’s pretty nifty with a samurai sword too. All in all, a very cool movie that’s certainly not for everyone, like most Miike movies. The ending will leave you wanting more, that’s for sure. PICTURE: Nice widescreen print here, no complaints. SOUND: No noticable hiss or anything like that, sounds fine to me. EXTRAS: Biographies Filmographies Movie Stills Trailers Warrior Artwork VERDICT: A basic package of extras. But to be honest it’s the film that matters here, and it’s definetly worth a purchase. Especially when you consider that the region one release doesn’t even have a menu and has burned on subtitles. And although I’d read that this region two release had some violence trimmed by the BBFC I had a hard time telling where it was cut, so don’t let that put you off, because even if it has been cut what we have left is still extremely violent and obscene, so all is good in the world. www.artsmagic.co.uk |
