The BEYOND (Region 1 Anchor Bay edition) The Film: An eerie movie, which is basically set around gory/creepy set pieces. There isn’t much of a story it’s all very vague, but that was the point Fulci was aiming for, the kind of thing Argento was doing with SUSPIRIA and more importantly INFERNO. (Click here for a full review). Picture The Beyond has never looked better as it does here. The picture is clean and crisp, and the colours and rich and vibrant. It’s obvious that a lot of effort went in to restoring this classic movie, and a very good job has been done. Sound Sometimes with DVD’s, the main effort goes into either the picture or the sound; but here we have both. The sound is great, really pounding and atmospheric due to a new 5.1 surround mix. For a good example on how much the sound has been cleaned up, check out the infamous ‘headshot’ scene. In fact any gore scene, you can hear every crack and splat, very nice indeed. Extras A fine selection of extras here, especially for big fans of the movie like myself. First there are trailers, some people complain about having trailers on DVD’s, saying that they just waste space. I personally don’t think so; I think it’s interesting to see how films were marketed, especially violent as hell Italian horror flicks. Then we have a colour version of the intro taken from an old German print of the movie. My favourite extra is the photo gallery, because it’s like a photo gallery documentary. It goes from pictures accompanied by the score of the movie and then to interviews with Fulci, Warbeck and MacColl, and then some footage from a Q&A session, and a tribute to David Warbeck, who sadly passed away not long after he recorded the commentary for this movie. The commentary is fantastic; Warbeck and MacColl have a great time seeing the movie again, and share anecdotes from the set and let us in on some in-jokes and funny stories. The most pointless extra is a music video directed by Jim Van Bebber (Deadbeat at Dawn), the band are a black metal out fit by the name of Necrophagia; this is a really pointless extra which you will only watch once (if you can be arsed to sit through it) The video is just badly shot footage of the band playing along to the song. Okay, the song is about the film, and there are clips of the movie shown, but it’s still totally pointless. And im sure the guitarist is Phil Anselmo from Pantera. A great disc (from the usually overrated in my view) Anchor Bay. |
