Spuffjockeys DVD Recommendations
Here are Spuffjockeys list of “Must Own” DVD’s….
Yodasnoog’s Picks

Mad Max: (MGM Special Edition)
Region: 1

The definitive Mad Max fans DVD. The movie has never looked better, with a glorious remastering job and a new 5.1 soundtrack. In the US it was marketed as having “the original Australian dialogue”, but us here in the UK have had this for years, so for is its good to hear the terrible (but funny) dubbed American version that was previously only available on a way out of print rental tape. Including two specially made documentaries, trailers, a brilliant informative commentary, and a fun facts trivia option which when activated, text appears on screen telling of interesting facts about the scene.
Lets just hope that the rest of the movies in the trilogy get similar treatment, Mad Max 2 definitely deserves better than its current “fuck all in the way of extras” release, in classic Warner Brothers style…Pfff.
Brother (Film Four release)
Region: 2

For those US readers of Spuffjockey’s, if you’re looking to get a hold of this movie then this is the disc to get. For one its fully uncut compared to the US region 1 release (for a change) and it contains the brilliant Scenes By The Sea documentary made by channel 4. Which covers Kitano’s career all the way up to Brother, full of great interviews. Also containing behind the scenes footage and on set interviews, this is THE best Kitano DVD out there as far as extras go.
The Beyond (Anchor Bay)
Region: 1

Lucio Fulci’s zombie classic gets the royal treatment in this Anchor Bay release for the US. For a start the print of the film looks superb, and the sound has been cleaned up amazingly, it’s a lot more crisp and bone crunching now (check out the girl getting her head blown in half for example).
Includes an excellent witty and informative commentary by stars Catriona MacColl and the late David Warbeck. A well-designed picture gallery that splices photos and rare video interviews together, which works well. There are trailers, a (pointless and quite shit) music video and a few hidden extras too (including a trailer for Fulci’s ultra gory “A Cat In The Brain”). This is well worth picking up.
Halloween (Anchor Bay 2 disc set)
Region: 1+2

A great double disc set for a great movie. The first disc is the original cut of the movie, a fantastic print of it too. The extras include trailers and TV and radio spots, a great (and huge) photo gallery, and a brand new documentary on the movie entitled Halloween Unmasked 2000 (narrated by Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider
“I wanna rock” indeed)
The second disc contains the “TV Version” of the movie, which contains the new footage Carpenter shot during the making of Halloween 2, for Halloweens TV debut in America. And it actually adds to the film, instead of just wasting time (well, except for one scene). A great disc(s).
Ada-Padz’ Picks

The Terminator/T2: Judgement Day (MGM Special Editions)
Region: 2

Two amazing films, four fantastic discs. The sci-fi flick that launched Arnie into the big time has got a wide selection of “special stuff” on it. A brilliant ‘Making of’ with James Cameron talking about how the was ill when he came up with the idea of the film. Plenty of Deleted scenes and TV spots to enjoy.
T2 is a bigger disc, literally with the huge bulky steel-looking box, and with 6 hours (yes that’s right 6) you’re never going to get bored with this sucker.
Superman: The Movie; Special Edition/ Superman II (WB release)
Region: 2

Director Richard Donner always wanted his big 1978 movie of the last son of krypton to be something special and big, and Warner (surprisingly) did not let him down. The disc for ‘Superman I’ has three good documentaries on it and will answer the constant question Donner was always repeatedly asked – “Why’d they sack you after Superman I?”
Evil Dead: The Book Of The Dead Edition (Anchor Bay)
Region:1 or 2

You cannot miss the packaging for this classic horror masterpiece from Sam Raimi, it is pure genius. Designed like the necronomicon book from the film it alone will make you want to buy this wonderful DVD. An enjoyable and witty documentary from Bruce Campbell about obsessed fans is a must see.
Apocalypse Now: Redux (Miramax)
Region: 2

Although missing the amazing ‘making of’ on the disc, this still holds a valuable and important piece of film on it. The extra 49 minutes make it an epic and add more character to Willard and Kurtz. I heard it is to be re-released at Christmas 2003 and will have the ‘Heart Of Darkness; Making of’ on it. But if you cannot wait that long (I couldn’t as I bought it on the day of release) JUST GET IT!
