Amelie Poulain is a quiet retiring young French waitress, who’s quite troubled childhood has left her feeling different. Educated at home because her parents mistakenly believed her to be ill, she retreated into her own little fantasy world full of wonder and excitement. Her uneventful life as a waitress changes one day when she finds a box filled with ‘someone’s lost memories’ she tracks down the person and secretly returns it to them. She has found her life’s vocation – helping people find happiness, joy and love. She continues on this bizarre unselfish quest until she herself falls in love.
Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s beautifully shot, constructed and acted film is a delight to watch. I expected a typical French chick flick but instead got this entertaining, witty and charming comedy about relationships, loss and identity.
So many great stand out scenes especially all the tricks Amelie plays on a neighbor she dislikes. The film is crammed full of characters, it displays even the smallest characters habits and history in a quirky rapid style and highlights the ‘hidden wonder’ in everyone. The films feel good factor is undeniable – Lost loves unite, dreams are fulfilled, fantasies lived out, broken hearts mended – it’s all there and should leave you smiling (not just a smirk a big ear to ear Blair teeth shower) for months.
Obvious stand out performance from the stunning Audrey Tatou, her portrayal of the cute and clever devious heroin is top class. Another mention to Mathieu Kassovitz (La Haine Review Here) as the love interest quite a good actor and enjoyable to watch playing someone a lot more sincere after his ‘Birthday Girl’ performance.
A must see film for anyone, so much to enjoy. |
