Super Mario Sunshine!! I've made a SMS section of my Mario Kart 64 Profile. SMS is Mario's newest outing. There's screenshots (some from beta), and some proofs and strategic tips on some World Records ('WRs'). Hover over images to read commentary. All of the 'Try it' tidbits are things I discovered on my own. Most are not well known, and some might not be known by anybody! =) |

Bianco Hills
212/212 coins (Ep 8) The first world (although you can access Pianta Village before this level). It's surprisingly difficult. I collected all blue coins here without a guide, but some were very obscure to find! The Dirty Lake Secret is one of the most difficult obstacle courses. I particularly dislike the singing flower enemies, and the Pokeys! Collecting all 212 coins is a nightmare. You have to be quick with Yoshi to eat the 4 Skeeters in the lake before they run into something and disappear, and then you have to get the 5 coins from the large waterwheel and pray that none go inside a wall. And on top of that, you have beat an extremely nasty Pokey on the ropes over the lake, and get all 3 coins from him! I don't exaggerate when I say that it can take about 20 attempts before getting the 22 tricky coins. Hillside Secret (Red Coin Challenge): 0'31"04* - Whoa! Incredible. I was challenged by someone in GameFAQs, who told me that the Nintendo Power record for this challenge was 27.4? seconds. I utterly destroyed that "record", and I think this is good enough to be a WR. I've broken 30 seconds lots of times. You can use any nozzle you want, but you must collect the 8 red coins. Also, did you know that you can get the 8 red coins without any nozzles at all? I've done it with 5 seconds to spare! Try it: There's a blue coin up on a ledge in some episodes, on the left end of the village. Most people think you can only get it with the Rocket Nozzle. All you have to do is spin jump and hover from the smaller 'tower' on the nearby house. Easy, huh? |

Ricco Harbor
144/144 coins (Ep 1) Cool level! This was the first in which I got all coins (save 999 coin bugs in Pinna/Delfino). The first episode is used for the max coins - collect 101, and then go fight Blooper Glooper.. after the cut scene, some enemies and coins re-appear. This cut-scene trick works in a few other courses too.. Pinna Park and Delfino Plaza! Surfing Safari: 23'59 - Crazy race, very tough to do perfect. There's a cool shortcut. I have 31'99 without the shortcut. Red Coins: 1'37"36 - I came up with a 1'37+ strategy on my own, and improved it slightly with Daniel's suggestion. Try it: When starting the Surfing Safari (Ep 2), switch nozzles in mid-air and hover away without talking. Explore, the timer won't budge. Try it: Get the 'X' sign blue coins without the Turbo Nozzle. |

Gelato Beach
155/155 coins (Ep 8) One of the nicest levels. I like the Sand Bird stage. The blue coins were a breeze here, except for throwing a fruit into the blender.. wtf? As for the coins, it's a similar nightmare to Bianco Hills. You can break the watermelons for 10 each, but you should deliver the 2 smaller melons to the kiosk. The guy throws 10 coins in random positions. It's hard to collect all 20 from both melons! The rest of the coins are relatively simple. Il Piantissimo: 9'60* Great time, possibly a bit flukey. It requires to spin-jump with the Turbo onto the bricks, followed by a quick jump on the grass and dash for the flag.. while never letting go of R. Tricky! Try it: Get the blue coin atop the line of coins (above the bee-hive) without the rocket nozzle! Easy once you know how. |

Pinna Park
999/999 coins (Ep 2) Nice world. Upbeat music (it sounds very appropriate, too) and lots of rides. One of the first levels I got all 30 blue coins in. Getting 999 coins is simple, just spray the Bullet Bills in Ep 2. I have 218 coins (Ep 6) without this bug, but there are actualy 10 more coins in Ep 8! Ep 8 is also one of the most fun and challenging tasks in the game. Try it: You can get all shines and blue coins without collecting any yellow coins (obviously not the 100-coin shine). Try it: In the Yoshi-go-round secret, remember when you wall-kick off the orange blocks near the end? When you're on top of that place, you can spin-jump straight towards the shine, avoiding the annoying up-down block. Try it: In the Ferris Wheel episode, get to where the Red Coins shine appeared. Spin jump and hover towards either side of the ferris wheel (not directly towards the center) and you'll go through the rotating metal, landing on top. Cool shortcut.. |

Sirena Beach
999/999 coins (Ep 5) Some people hate this world, but I think a hotel ready to be explored is a perfect level design! You can get 999 coins from fighting enemies in King Boo's battle. But it takes several hours and I stopped short. Scrubbing Sirena: 2'25"64* - (hyperlink shows 2'15"64). My average here is over 2'15. This one hurts your fingers, but the idea is to jump, and press A+R together in mid-air. Myself and Ben rock da beach. Red Coins: 4'16"01* - (hyperlink shows 4'09"64) I broke 4'15! With my own strategy! I found a quicker strategy than than approx. 4'10 I learnt from Stefan Mahrla's 4'09"48 WR video. Try it: Tired of running up the stairs to talk to the owner of the Hotel? Just spray some water and slide on it - slide straight up the stairs. |

Noki Bay
231/231 coins (Ep 8) I hate the unclean water, but the course is nice when the water is clean again. There are 127 (!) coins on the outside, and 104 in the underwater city. There are a few tricky coins in the outside.. there are 9 'windows' on the cliff near the waterfall, a hidden coin in a niche on the right cliff (3 coins in the right cliff in total), and you can collect 9 (!) coins of the 9 where the rocket nozzle is (you MUST carry a blue trampoline to the rocket nozzle location. I was the first person to achieve this. It's difficult!![ pic1, pic2, pic3]) Il Piantissimo: 12"88* - (hyperlink shows 13"39) Very fast. There is a theory of a faster strategy, but it's much more difficult. Here is a picture of the strategy I used for 13"39. Try it: Enter the Shell's Secret Red Coins level using the Rocket Nozzle. It becomes super easy inside with the Rocket. Try it: Go up to where the cannon was in Ep 1. Jump on the nearby higher platform with 1-up and the purple flower. Spin jump and hover over the waterfall, to grab onto the ledge near where Blooper Glooper is in Ep 2! Nice shortcut. |

Pianta Village
999/999 coins (Ep 6) Fairly nice course. I've always complained that it's hard to find health and coins in this world :) You can get 999 coins in Ep 6, by letting the Piantas sink back in the goop. Uncover them for a coin, and repeat this 998 times! This took me 51/2 hours. You can enter this level before any other! Jump from a manhole and hover to the ledges on the Shine Gate. Wall kick (or triple jump) and hover, and you can grab onto the top of the Shine Gate! Il Piantissimo: 14"15* The idea is to spray water and slide on it, and get through the gap. Piantissimo kinda gets in my way, but this is close to perfect. Piantas in Need: 2'06"49* - The trick is to talk to a clean Pianta nearby while waiting for one to come out of the goop once you've sprayed it. The timer stops, but the dirty Pianta will come out and clean himself off a little! Try it: In any episode, get to the platform where the Rocket Nozzle is in Ep 8. Spin jump and hover towards the tree trunk to land on the top-most platform. Again spin jump and hover directly at the tree trunk, and you'll propel yourself to the top of the tree - no Rocket! (Alternatively, climb the tree which had Piantissimo's finish flag. Get on the leaves, and hover onto the closest leaf of the huge palm) Try it: In Ep 8, run along the bridge. At the end, jump off and hover to get the red coin underneath. Fall down and use the bouncy green mushroom near the star to get back on the bridge. 1 down, 7 to go! Nice shortcut. Try it: In Ep 3, run left towards the tree. Hang off the edge and drag yourself across, avoiding the lava. Climb up the tree, and get the leaf facing the Mayor. Jump off to land on the mushroom below (it has a flame on it). Jump and dive and you get FLUDD. Nice shortcut! |

Delfino Plaza
999/999 coins Very cool place. Tons to do. You can 300+ coins without any cheating. To do this, start a new file, and collect around 150 coins in the Plaza. Clean the goop and chase Shadow Mario. All the coins have returned, but you still have 150 with you. Collect another 150 (there's 152 in total). You can even collect 999 coins legit!! There is a Pianta who later in the game is on fire and gives a blue coin. Before you uncover the Pianta Statue, he's walking near the west Bell Tower. Attract some goop enemies and dirty the path. He'll walk into the goop and sink. Clean him to get this blue coin as your first blue coin in the game! From now on, you get a yellow coin each time he sinks and you clean him. You can get 999 this way, without using 'Exit Area' bugs or collecting Shines. Try it: Most people think you can access the Airstrip only when you beat Bowser. This is wrong. When the Plaza floods, enter Corona Mountain. Press 'Exit Area'. Tada, no flood. And you spent only 1 second in Corona Mountain.. you can access the Airstrip now. Try it: You can enter the pipe in north-west Delfino without the Rocket Nozzle. Spin jump and hover from near the Pinna cannon to land on a palm tree trunk. Make your away onto the leaves, and you're in! Alternatively, jump out of the water towards the wall, wall kick and hover to land on the tree trunk. Try it: You can 100 coins as your 2nd shine in the game. The coins are easy, but the shine is on the banana platform.. and there's no boats! Now what? Jump out of the water, and wall kick off the platform. Quickly hover, turn around, and get the shine. Easy!! Try it: You can get the 8 red coins in the poison river pipe without the lily pad. Just hover from edge to edge, collecting coins. Try it: You can get the shine in the house left of the Pianta Statue without the Turbo Nozzle! Using Yoshi, do the "Yoshi Underground" glitch. Make your way underneath the house. Spin jump, and dismount Yoshi, going through the floor of the house - you're inside! Try it: You can get the Pachinko Machine shine as your 2nd in the game! There are no moving boats or Rocket Nozzles this early in the game. However, from near the Racoon Hut, jump and hover towards the hole, and butt stomp as the hover wears off. You can even avoid touching the coin, for those of your wishing to do coin-less quests. Try it: It's a known fact that you can fall through the roof of the Racoon Hut and land inside. But what happens when the hut is closed (at the very start of the game)?! You fall through it, and fall back into Delfino Plaza from up high, but all the water/buildings/ground are invisible. Everything is blue. You can only see interactive objects: coins, shines, doors, trees, natives, etc. Looks crazy! |

Airstrip
999/999 coins This place is great. It's very pretty. And there's lots of coins, and a very fun shine to collect! The 999 coins counts as the same shine as Delfino Plaza, which is a bit odd. Also, there's a blue coin inside the tower - cool idea. Red Coins: 1'32"40* - Good strategy, and a darn fast time. There are many different strats here, but I think the one I'm using is tops. The idea is not to use the Turbo the entire time, since it's faster to slide on Mario's wet belly. Get the coin under the bridge first, then go through the tower, 2 on runway, and then do the last 4 clockwise. Try it: Can you get on top of the tower in the Airstrip? It's pretty easy actually, but most people would overlook it. Get the Rocket Nozzle in Delfino Plaza, and ride the boat to the Airstrip. You keep the nozzle with you! Blast off to the top. |

The Other Interesting Stuff |

Hardest Shine- Secret of the Dirty Lake Most liked enemies- Bowser, Butterflies Most annoying creatures- Pokey! Electro-Koopa! The little red guys who are on fire. Favorite course- Pinna Park and Gelato Beach Most hated course- Corona Mountain.. nothing to do there. Favorite part- Piantissimo's speeches (he's hilarious), setting good times. Thanks to Daniel (aka 'Supreme' aka 'Supreme2002') for coin tips and speed-tricks on many of the races, and Stefan ('Mahrla') for some descriptive videos of his accomplishments. |

Total Game Coins | 4738/4738** | Maximum coins? I was the first person to achieve this score. Some credit to silktail for the hint. |
Blooper Surfing Safari (Ricco 2) | 0'23"59 | Equal 2nd place, very tough. Daniel's 23.52 WR is strong.
Red Coins on the Water (Ricco 6) | 1'37"36 | I came up with the 1'37+ strategy on my own, but got beaten by Daniel and Chris. This time used to be a WR.
Il Piantissimo's Sand Sprint (Gelato 5) | 0'09"60* | Whoot! I also have 9"99 without the spin-jump!
Il Piantissimo's Surf Swim (Noki 5) | 0'12"88* | Hybrid strategy of my own strat, and Daniel's sprint-for-the-finish-line path. Very fast, but beatable.
Scrubbing Sirena Beach (Sirena 6) | 2'25"64* | Can't go much better. A pictorial description of my 2'10+ strategy.
![]() |
Red Coins in the Hotel (Sirena 8) | 4'16"01* | I found the quickest strat with the help of Mahrla's video, and used it to break 4'15. It's beatable.. Mahrla broke 4'15 too! |
Il Piantissimo's Crazy Climb (Pianta 2) | 0'14"15* | Whoa this is fast. I've had over ten races between 14"27-37, this is my first time under 14"27.. incidentally under the former 14"24 WR.
Piantas in Need (Pianta 6) | 2'06"49* | Hybrid strategy of my own trick on the last few Piantas, but mainly Daniel's 2'04+ strategy. Very, VERY fast.
Red Coins in the Airstrip (Delfino) | 1'32"40* | Entirely my own strategy. It's a great time.
Overall game time | 2:06'53hr*? | I used lots of good shortcuts, and had 49 shines. This is very fast! Start timing when you first enter Delfino Plaza, stop timing when you enter Bowser's Bath Tub (the "Prima" timing scheme).
120 shines | 5:58'38hr | Timed from entering Delfino until the counter says 120 shines. Cut-scenes excluded, except the ones before/in Pinna Park. This can be better, but it's not easy, and takes ages. |
