My sincere thanks to:
--Charles Sy (Class 1967) for the write-up about the 3rd LCHS GAH which gave me an idea as to what transpired during those two days (May 23-24, 2008).
--Peter Dy (Class 1966) for sending me the pictures that he took during the 3rd LCHS GAH. They sure made me happy and sad. Happy to see fellow alumni, classmates, friends maski sa pictures lang with matching expression of "Oh my God!" in seeing some fellow alumni having grown more mature, others looking younger or looking the same more or less. Sad because I was not able to make it that time to Iligan in general and LCHS in particular.
--Johnny Chen (Class 1983) for sending me the list of LCHS alumni who registered/attended the 3rd LCHS GAH which gave me an idea as to who were present or absent, while I correlated the list with the pictures that Peter sent.
Again, my heartfelt thanks to the three gentlemen. More power!
Now that GAH 2008 is over, it's time for the Spectrum to take a breather.
With the GAH gone and finished, there are less issues to report and even lesser events to cover. In the days ahead we expect fewer materials to trickle in from our regular writers and contributors. Inputs from our regular writers and contributors are bound to diminish. We'd like to believe that this is part of the natural course of events. The lull after the storm, so to speak.
Henceforth, the Spectrum will cease to come out regularly. Instead of every other Monday, it will come out on any Monday without any fixed interval. This paper will come out only each time we have sufficient materials to complete an issue. The more materials are received, the more frequently an issue shall be hatched.
What all this signifies is that each issue of the Spectrum will now depend entirely on the volume of materials we receive from our alumni -- without need on our part to solicit them.. Just like our local vans for hire. The van doesn't take off unless it's filled with passengers.
In our case, the bottom line is: Have articles, will publish.
Alumni tidbits
ON
TOUR. While LCHS alumni were all preoccupied with the 3rd GAH in Iligan
City, Santi Ong (Batch '70) was busy touring the vast expanse of
Australia late last month (in photo). Santi joined some twenty
other businessmen in a Dealer Incentive Tour sponsored by Konica Minolta.
The all-expenses-paid trip, from May 19 to 26, took the group to Sydney,
Brisbane, Gold Coast, and other major cities of Australia.
GAH FIRST TIMERS. There was quite a good number of first timers at the GAH 2008 last May 23-24. Among those spotted were Janne Co, Lily Siao, Glenda Siao, Kenton Sua, Emelita Lee, Willy Dy, Janet Dy, Ritky Dy, Sally Vy, Dennis Khu, Johnny Chu, Grace Joy Boniao, and a whole lot more from the younger batches.
JUST HEARD. "Spotlight" just heard that Janet Lee-Tan (Batch '69) has retired from her job as a banker in Iligan. She joins her husband, Jose Tan, in managing their own business dealing in hardware and construction supply in Iligan. Meanwhile, Hilton Neil Sy (Batch '96), son of Aurora Ong Sy (Batch '66), is now connected with Profood International Corp. A civil engineer by profession, Hilton heads the construction division of the company. On the side, Hilton also owns a piggery farm in Cebu.
JUST MARRIED. Words recently reached "Spotlight" that a daughter of Edna Maria Go got married last June 7 in Manila. No details were available. Edna is the younger sister of Josephine Jane Go and Jose Sam Go. She now lives in Manila with her husband Delfin Ong. Also just married is Sharon Sy (Batch 2000), daughter of Sy Beng Gui (Batch '57). The groom is from Cagayan de Oro. The wedding took place last June 15 in Iligan with reception at the Maria Cristina Hotel.
Charles O. Sy, Batch '67
At the recent GAH, the young ones outnumbered the young once. Move over, old dinosaurs; the young dragons have arrived.
Rodolfo Yu showed up briefly at the GAH. He looked leaner but much healthier. When we saw him on the first day of the GAH, we all chorused, "Glad to see Yu!"
Former teacher Fidel Fuertes was among the few mentors who graced the GAH. At age 86, he certainly doesn't look his age. Just goes to show the kind of materiales fuertes he is made of.
The 4th GAH in 2011 will be co-hosted by Batch '87. This early the batch is already at work. They recently held a fighting cock derby in Iligan to raise funds. Another round of derby is being planned. Maybe they can also invite some talents from the Resurrection of the Lord to perform there. They can then call the affair "Let Derby Light."
Most of the dancing, singing and frolicking at the GAH were dominated by the young generation of alumni. The teen-aged children of the members of the Resurrection of the Lord regaled us with their singing skills and power dances. But their parents were not to be outdone. They were equally dazzling as they performed the popular dances of the 60s.
Notwithstanding a minor false start, Janne Co, too, proved he could still dish out the songs of the 60s with grace and aplomb. He gave a stirring rendition of Elvis Presley's "Blue Hawaii" and received a big round of applause from an appreciative audience.
Inspired by Janne's performance, Mike Handumon, LCHS campus idol of the 60s, volunteered to sing too. He said he would prove that he could also sing current hits. He sang Lara Fabian's "Broken Vow" and encountered a brief "broken voice" on the high notes. Other than that, it was a fine and well-received performance.
Despite the gallant efforts of Janne, Mike and other older alumni, it was still the young ones who hugged the limelight and stole the thunder in the recent GAH. But the older folks aren't complaining. This new breed of young alumni stalwarts has proven its mettle. They gave us a darn good show.
Welcome greetings to school year 2008–2009! As we endeavor to start the school year with renewed vigor and enthusiasm, the administration together with its faculty and staff is moving extra mile in standards and services to meet the challenges that should bring positive benefits for the school, most especially the students. Some facilities in school have undergone repair and rebuilding.
(1) The Kindergarten building has gone through a complete renovation. It will now house the Nursery, Kinder 1 and 2 including a staff office and a rest room for students who might need to stay a little longer in school. Each room is painted colorfully to provide the appropriate ambience for learning and will be air-conditioned.
(2) The ground floor comfort rooms located in the main building underwent repair and re-tiling and provided with mirrors. The drainage and piping systems are now fixed.
(3) Finally, a covered walk-way connecting canteen pathway to gym was built.
All these developments are collaborative undertakings of the Chinese Chamber, LACHSPA, Student Government and Junior Student Council.
Please find in our attachment the welcome address of our school director, Henry T. Siao, at the 3rd GAH reunion, assuring the community on the school's thrust which is to strengthen further the "English standard of its students without neglecting to nurture its excellence in math and the sciences, hoping to become the best school in English excellence within four years."
