READY TO ROCK
All set for GAH 2008
By Johnny T. Chen (Batch '83)

GAHAll is set for the 3rd LCHS Grand Alumni Homecoming on May 23-24, 2008 at the LCHS gym, Pala-o, Iligan City. All preparations are in place and members of different committees are all at work to ensure a successful gathering for all alumni.

Meanwhile, the 3GAH Steering Committee tendered a luncheon party in honor of the past presidents of the lCHS Alumni Association at the JY Dimsum last May 8.  Attending the meeting were Immediate PP Henry Dy, PPs Vy Ben Hong, Arturo Samson, Dy Sio Te, Andy Ang, Manuel Te, Fe Quimbo, Chua Tek An and Guardson Siao. During the luncheon meeting, the 3GAH committee updated the past presidents on the preparation and schedule of events for the 3GAH. The committee also sought the assistance of the past presidents on the ongoing registration campaign.

The past presidents in turn suggested (and subsequently approved by the 3GAH group) that the theme for evening of May 24 set to be held at Elena Tower Inn be changed from a subdued formal Gala Night into a less formal but more festive Grand Fellowship Night. Schedule and program remain as is, except for the dress code which has been amended from formal (barong/gown) to informal or Sunday's Best. It was observed that many alumni tend to shy away from attending the Gala Night because of the formal dress code.

Countdown to GAH

Fellow alumni: Countdown: It's now 13 Days to our 3rd GAH! Once again, it's time to come together, have fun, and show our love for LCHS, our Alma Mater. Our 3rd GAH is now just around the corner and the GAH steering Committee is finalizing every detail to ensure a memorable and enjoyable affair.  It' been eight years since our 1st GAH in 2000, followed by our 2nd GAH in 2005.  Seeing and hugging one another surely made a big difference.  Now everyone is longing to see and hug each other again.  Ah, to be young again!

Once again, it's time to rekindle our ties.  I have not forgotten our dear Alma Mater to this day having served our alumni association for several years now.  It's always good to revisit our Alma Mater once in a while.  We have so much shared memories enshrined in our Alma Mater.  I still remember 1974.  That was the year the name of our Alma Mater was changed from Lanao Chinese High School to Lanao Community School.  Thereafter, it was renamed Lanao Chung Hua School.  The Officers and Directors of our alumni association join the members of the hardworking GAH Steering Committee in inviting you all to the momentous event on May 23-24, 2008.  We look forward to see you all back in our 3rd GAH!

A Time For Us

A showbiz mag reports that many "American Idol" finalists find themselves jobless after a brief period of fame.  They all go on to join the ranks of American Idle.

Why is it not advisable to share secrets in a farm? Because the corns have ears, the pineapples have eyes, and the beans talk.

Sammy Go laments that the body of new cars these days easily gets dented.  Seems they don't make cars any more like they auto.

Many alumni want Suniel "Boy" Lim and Rodolfo Yu to perform another duet at the GAH by singing "Devoted To You" and other songs of the Everly Brothers. Great. Henceforth, Boy and Rudy can call themselves the Elderly Brothers.

In less than a week, the 3rd LCHS Grand Alumni Homecoming will unfold.  Latest reports indicate that the registration has exceeded 200.  And many more are signing up. It has surpassed the record of GAH 2005 which posted only a little over 200 registrants.  From the looks of things, it's likely that the figure will top 300 on D-day.

There's no doubt the two-day hoopla will spell awesome fun for all those in attendance. I've been to the two previous GAHs, and still I eagerly look forward to the next one as if it were my first.  Each grand reunion is special in its own way.  Each moment one spends with one's hometown friends has its share of magic and nostalgia.

The GAH is no instant picnic. An event of such magnitude doesn't take place overnight. It comes only once in a blue moon. It's planned way ahead and well organized to allow us to relive the good old days and rekindle old ties with batch mates, teachers and old friends in an atmosphere of fun and fellowship – all in one setting

This is a time for us.  Don't let this rare moment pass you by. Let's seize it. Let's treasure it. Let's be part of it. We never know who will or will not be around to share another such moment with us the next time around.

Forty Years Ago

Iligan City. 1968. Where were we? What were we doing? What were the happenings and the IN things of that era? Do you remember that time in your life?

Join me as we recapture the splendor of the year gone by, down to where beautiful memories were built and created once upon a time in the City of Iligan by us who can only look back at it with nostalgic undertones, with a smile and a song in our hearts ...

o 1968. We were in third year high school at LCHS under the tutelage of Ms. Nonela Wong, Mr. Giner, Ms. Catalina Daan, etc.

o We were the reigning teenagers of the jam session era who would dance the Soul, Grind and Bye-Bye to our heart's delight. They were the popular dance crazes then.

o Among the top hit songs of the era were: Diamond Ring, There's A Kind of Hush, It's Nice To Be With You, It Must Be Him, Devoted To You, Don't Sleep In The Subway, I Understand, Mr. Lonely, Sealed With A Kiss, She Wears My Ring, You Don't have To Say You Love Me, Together Again, Two Lovely Flowers, etc.

o James Bond 007 films of Sean Connery were still the top grosser, along with our local version of Tony Ferrer as Agent X-44 and Eddie Fernandez as Agent Lagalag. Stella Suarez and Divina Valencia were the sex nymphets then. Black and white Tagalog films were produced by Sampaguita, LVN, Premier, Larry Santiago, Lea Productions, etc.

o We were avid fans of the Beatles, Gary Lewis & the Playboys, The Lettermen, Everly Brothers, Petula Clark, Eddie Peregrina, Eddie Mesa & the Hijacks, Jose Mari & the Electromaniacs, etc. We would buy their latest hit songs on 45 RPM records as well as the latest issues of Song Cavalcade or Jingle songhits to go along with.

o We were crazy over penpal writing, sending letters via air mail thru the Iligan City Post Office, located then along Sabayle St., a walking distance from LCHS and St. Peter's College.

o Weekends would find us at a classmate's house for some jam sessions or eating halo-halo while listening to our favorite songs from the jukebox.

o We were into signing autographs and slum books. Back home, we would listen to those radio dedication programs as our nocturnal habit.

o We were into collecting several things, like: stamp, postcard, coins, whatever.

o We would buy the latest issues of Graphic, Expressweek, Movie Star, Bisaya, Wakasan komiks, etc.

o We would apply Tancho, Dixie Peach or Staycomb to our hair, and splashed ourselves with colognes, like Old Spice or Mennen Skin Bracer.

o The girls would use the products made by Fanbo or Kokuryo. They had their hair done the Twiggy style and wore psychedelic miniskirts with matching fishnet stockings.

o The boys wore jack shirts and tight water repellent or gabardine pants, Ang Tibay or Alex shoes, Custombuilt rubber shoes, Spartan rubber slippers, Vonnel, Banlon, etc.

o Our favorite brands of snack foods and pica-pica were: Royco's chicken noodle soup, Cheese and Barbecue Curls which were then very new in the market, Ricoa chocolates, Curly Tops, Serg's, Goya, crackers and biscuits made by London Biscuit, M.Y San or Fibisco, etc.

1968. Forty years ago. How many of these that I've mentioned do you still remember vividly as when they actually happened or were the IN things at that time of our youth?

1968 - the year that was. But deep in our hearts and minds, the memories will always linger like no other, untarnished with the passage of time.

Yes, 1968. It was a very good year.

Women's locker room
A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover.

The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, "What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?"

A Grade-6 teacher of LCHS for many years, Mr. Fuertes who is now retired still keeps an active lifestyle. He frequently visits alumni for a chat like Dionesio Chiu in Tibanga.
