Ramos Holds Cabinet Meeting in Iligan
President Fidel Ramos held his 23rd regional Cabinet meeting at the
MSU-IIT gymnasium, Iligan City, last May 20.
While in Iligan, the President, accompanied by City Mayor Alejo Ybanez,
inspected several projects along the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Corridor, such
as the Laguindingin airport, the city abattoir, the planned integrated
bus terminal, and the Balo-i airport, which will soon be reopened. The
newly elected barangay officials also took their oath of office before
the President.
Pres. Ramos also announced during the Iligan multisectoral assembly the release of P534 million for the government's poverty alleviation program in Mindanao.
A separate allocation of P49 million will be released for the repair of the seven-kilometer Aurora-Iligan Road; P60 million for the completion of the Lake Lanao Circumferential Road; and P5 million for Iligan River Flood Control.
DXIC Commentator Nabbed
A radio reporter-commentator was arrested for libel inside the announcer's booth while conducting his daily program last May 19.
Philip Ken Jaudian, 32, a reporter-commentator of DXIC was arrested while conducting his program "Tora-Tora sa 711". He was handcuffed by SPO3 Demetrio Teofilo Jr. on the strength of an arrest warrant issued by RTC Judge Amer Pukunum Tuntugar.
Jaudian was arrested after Salome Timajo, an employee at the City Mayor's Office, filed a libel charge against him for allegedly bismirching her name. Jaudian allegedly mentioned in his program, after receiving complaints from students, that an undisclosed amount of money intended for the mayor's scholarship program was deposited by Timajo in her own account.
DXIC station manager Richard Vallar, on his part, said, "We suspect this is an act of vengeance but we also believe that you cannot put down a good man."

Spectrum Funding?
A few concerned alumni have come forward inquiring if the Spectrum would need any financial assistance or contribution to keep it going. Our answer is: No, thank you. The Spectrum is circulated free to all alumni on the Internet. All efforts of the staff are voluntary in nature and dedicated mainly to the service of the LCHS alumni community. The Spectrum, being a paperless newsletter, doesn't entail much production cost except for the minimal Internet log-in time. Such is the marvel of the Internet. This, reinforced by the spirit of the LCHS alumni, is what keeps the Spectrum going.
LAUGH LINES
Traditions
An American tourist, amused by an array of food offered
by a Chinese family on the grave of a departed kin, asked sarcastically,
"When do you think your ancestors will rise to eat your food?"
The elder Chinese replied, "Ah, at the same time your ancestors will rise to smell your flowers."
QUOTE IN THE ACT
This issue's QUOTE comes from the wisdom of a great man, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, contributed by Rene Tio, an LCHS alumnus and now a successful businessman in Cagayan de Oro:
Time of Your Life
"Youth is not a time of life. It is a state of mind. It is a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions. Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years. People grow old by deserting their ideals. Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear, and despair--these bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust.
You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as your heart receives messages of beauty, cheer, courage, grandeur, and power from the earth, from man and from the Infinite, so long are you young. When the wires are all down, and the central place of your heart is covered with the snows of pessimism and the ice of cynicism, then, and only then, are you grown old indeed, and may God have mercy on your soul. Live every day of your life as though you expect to live forever."
