REVIEWS

Laura Branigan had greater creative participation in the making of her seventh album, earning credits for songwriting, arrangements, and production. Industry vet Phil Ramone was the main producer, however, and the result was a move away from the disco diva approach of Branigan's earlier records and a move toward the pop-rock mainstream. Given that Branigan's albums had shown a downward sales pattern, it was a fair attempt at repositioning, but these undistinguished romantic ballads, whether by Branigan herself, Michael Bolton, Gloria Estefan, or others, failed to offer the singer an opportunity to steady herself in the middle of the road. As a result, Over My Heart came in under the pop radar screen: It didn't reach the charts and disappeared quickly after release.

Acclaimed singer applies her graceful alto to a collection of first-rate originals plus songs written for her by the likes of Gloria Estefan, Michael Bolton, and Roxette"s Per Gessle. Title-track single is geared for AC play with potential pop crossover. The same is true of the touching opener ``How Can I Help You Say Goodbye," Gessle"s ``The Sweet Hello, The Sad Goodbye," and Branigan"s own ``Didn"t We Almost Win It All." Two curiosities here: an ode to lesbianism sung in Spanish, and a South African wedding song accompanied by a children"s choir.

Laura Branigan Over My Heart (Atlantic) Branigan's 1982 hit, "Gloria," took disco to operatic extremes, and her '84 "Self Control" was basically Joy Division's Goth-punk classic, "She's Lost Control," made more lurid. Nowadays, Branigan is beating Celine Dion at Dion's own game, dancing between a loudly sung boom and a lonely housewife gloom. On Over My Heart, she climbs out on a new limb, belting out lyrics in Spanish and a South African dialect. But she's still rending hearts, especially when she remembers the day her family moved away from her best friend in a '59 station wagon. B+ -Chuck
