Students Plan Food Drive At UWI.

A group of students at the St. Augustine campus of The University Of The West Indies is making an attempt to reduce hunger and starvation in Trinidad and Tobago. UWIAID - Solutions For Hunger has been active since October 1999, and since then the club has assisted a number of charity organizations in this country through the donation of non-perishable food items.

UWIAID - Solutions For Hunger has launched a massive food collection campaign in time for Christmas. The campaign, which as been titled 'Take Action' will run during the week of November 6th -17th 2000. Students and staff are asked to contribute non-perishable items, such as tinned or canned food, rice, flour, pasta, powdered milk and sugar. The club will be donating the proceeds of this food-drive to the less fortunate. Members of the public can also contribute to this food-drive, by donating items such as the ones mentioned above, at the Student's Guild Office at the University Of The West Indies. The proceeds of this food-drive will go to needy families in the St. Augustine area.

This food-drive will coincide with the United Nations' Food & Agriculture Organization's theme of A Millennium Free From Hunger. The return on investments in good nutrition can be extraordinary. Healthier children live longer healthier lives with fewer hospital visits and higher achievements in school. As healthier adults they have greater productivity and longer working lives They also make fewer demands on health care for nutrition-related diseases including diabetes, heart disease and cancers, which are also costly to diagnose and treat.
.
UWIAID - Solutions For Hunger has also set up a website, with links to some of the best resources about hunger and starvation around the world. The website address is http://uwiaid.cjb.net. The e-mail address is solutionsforhunger@yahoo.com. The club can be reached at its e-mail address or at the following mailing address:
