UWIAID Making The Difference On Campus.

The social and economic costs of poor nutrition are huge. More than half of the twelve million children who die before their fifth birthday each year are undernourished, while hundreds of millions of the survivors fail to develop to their full physical and mental potential. Some of the statistics about the state of the world can be overwhelming. One-fifth of the world's population survives on $1(US) a day. Forty million people die each year from hunger alone.

At least one club on campus is making an attempt to reduce hunger and starvation in Trinidad and Tobago. UWIAID - Solutions For Hunger has been active since October 1999, and since then the club has assisted a number of charity organizations in this country through the donation of non-perishable food items. Through its massive food-drive last Christmas, the club was able to assist the Kallap family of Curepe, the Wesleyan Orphanage in Longdenville, the Salvation Army Night Shelter in Port Of Spain, the Simeanna Home for the aged in St. James, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Families In Action and the Foundation For The Enhancement and Enrichment Of Life. The club was also able to contribute to the Venezuela flood disaster relief effort early this year. In August 2000, the club also sent care packages to the fire victims at the Spree Simon Centre in Port Of Spain as well as to the St. Vincent De Paul Society, the Salvation Army and Families In Action.

The return on investments in good nutrition can be extraordinary. Healthier children live longer healthier lives with fewer hospital visits and higher achievements in school. As healthier adults they have greater productivity and longer working lives They also make fewer demands on health care for nutrition-related diseases including diabetes, heart disease and cancers, which are also costly to diagnose and treat.
This year the club will focus on a series of events and charity ventures geared at improving the lives of individual families, rather than other non-government-organizations. World Food Day will be celebrated on October 16th, and the club will mark this event with a library display and special forums. The theme of this year's World Food Day is 'A Millennium Free from Hunger. The celebration of World Food Day in 150 countries around the world aims to heighten public awareness and understanding of world hunger, malnutrition and poverty.
The club's annual food-drive will take place in the week of November 6th to the 10th, and it is hoped that participation will be even greater than last year, through the inclusion of the Med-Sci campus and secondary schools in the St. Augustine area.

UWIAID - Solutions For Hunger is a member of the international network organization EarthAction, as well as the NetAid Movement.

Club elections for the 2000/2001 academic year, were held on Thursday April 14th. The President is Jason Nathu. The new Secretary is Adanna Ramsey. The new Financial Affairs Officer is Bianca Marshall. The new Fundraiser is Kai Barratt and the new Public Relations Officer is Crystal Brizan.

Everyday, in every part of the world, individuals and organizations are finding ways to fight, and win, the battle against these daunting problems. UWIAID is playing its part in the battle against hunger. Today is the first day of a call to action to connect people and problem-solvers on this campus and across Trinidad and Tobago. The Take Action website contains information and links to enable students to become a part of the solution. The website address is http://www.uwiaid.cjb.net .

Students of the St. Augustine and Med-Sci campuses are invited to participate in UWIAID meetings and events. For more information, please visit the club's website. Inquiries may also be made at the guild office, in the Students Activity Centre. The club may be reached by email at info@uwiaid.cjb.net . The battle over hunger is one that can be won. It's time to take action.
