The Dream of Valentine's Day, Kursat Basar He was planning what to present her for days. He should buy such a beautiful gift to the girl with whom everybody wanted to go out that, she should see how much he loves her, and how big his love to her was. Actually he didn’t know what kind of gifts she would like. Firstly, he thought to buy an expensive and an eye-blinking precious jewel, because, all the girls would like bright things… Especially the jewellery… A stone in the colour of her green eyes…. A jewel necklace for her thin and elegant neck… It was the midnight, his dreams were very big, however the truth was pretty different. Even if he wanted, he didn’t have money enough to buy such an expensive jewel. On the other hand, the girl didn’t need such a stone. ‘Cause, she already had it. So, he thought again what to buy for the girl. For example, a dress? He saw so beautiful dresses in some magazines and movies on those famous actresses that, he used to put off those dresses from them and put on the girl in his dreams… All those dresses suit her very well with her tall and thin body walking smoothly. Oh, no, no, a dress would be just a simple gift, an to be able to find a very special dress would be a very hard job. However, he thought to go to the market where finding the old goods was possible. Maybe he could find there some very old and precious items filled with memories. A gift to buy that nobody cares, and hard to find… What kind of a thing it could be… Oh, maybe a gramophone, oh yes, it was a very good idea, he could give her a gramophone and a 78 rpm record… It would be a great gift for the Valentine’s Day! He couldn’t sleep. He thought if he could find such a gramophone. And a song on a record that could tell her how much he loved her. An old song. When she went home, she’d play the song and she’d understand how much he loved her… He thought that it was so hard to tell “i love you” to a girl of whom everybody is after and everybody loved! Then he slept, planning to wake up early in the morning and go to the old-market and buy the gramophone for her. In his sleep, the dream-fairy touched him with her shining stick. She knew that there was a joy in his heart and that joy would long forever and ever… It was the joy of love… And the dream-fairy gave him a very beautiful dream. The boy was dancing to the girl on a endless green land in his dream. There was a gramophone, His Master’s Voice brand, somewhere on the ground and it was playing a tango, titled “You Are In My Heart”. The girl was silent, but he was thinking that the girl was saying him “i’ll never forget this day for you told me you loved me”. They were dancing in the endless green land among the flowers, and the boy was thinking “oh, what a beautiful day, i’d never imagine the light of the sun would be so bright” When he woke up in the morning, the dream was in his mind, and he was repeating it not to forget. He was thinking that what could be the sign of his dream. It was the Valentine’s Day. He gave up going to the old-market. He straightly went to the school in a while. When the girl came in, he went beside her, his friends stared at him with curiosity-eyes. He didn’t mind anybody, and told the girl “today’s the Valentine’s Day, and for the speciality of this day, i’ll give you a gift.” The girl asked, “oh, what did you buy for me?” “I bought something, but i can’t give it to you”, said the boy, “because, it’s a dream” “A dream?”, said the girl, and “what a strange gift, how could you present a dream as a gift” said the other students with confusing faces. The boy said, “yes, it’s a dream”, “a dream that tells how much i love you, because there was not any other thing but my dream to be able to tell how much i love you”. The girl said, “it sounds a beautiful dream, i must say, it’s the best gift i’ve ever had.” Kursat Basar, Yeni Yuzyil, February 13, 1997. Translation by Levent Varlik, sorry for mistakes : ( |
