John Smiley (his father was Robert) was born in Ireland in 1840 and came to America from Dublin sometime before the civil war. He married and had the following children: Jennie (1867), David (1869), John Jr. (1873), William S. (1884) and David John (1908)
This family lived at 609 Hermitage Steet in Roxboro from about 1902 through 1910. In the city directory John's occupation was listed as laborer, painter, engineer, watchman, butcher. David was a plumber, steamfitter, butcher, fixer and inspecter. John Jr. was a bartender, laborer and machinist. William S. was a painter.
William S. was married 3 times. With his wife Elizabeth, he had Robert W. Smiley (1911) and William Hoffman Smiley (1915) who is Scott's father.
