Well hi minna-sama! This is my 'waff' story that I promised Patch I right … (sighs) I'm not much a waff person, I think it's corny, but (coughs) I promised Kana, and well, I must follow through with it … sadly enough. Anyways, send me emails please!

===================================

Gazing into your heart
I find a fondled memory of you and I
Causing me to wonder
Is this really what you want?

It was a mutual agreement, something that they both had thought through before they had agreed to it. The relationship was not intended to be serious. They had agreed upon a fling,...only a fling.
A simple, typical fling, that's all they would have.
Nothing more.

Chapter 1

Enticed by the memory of your eyes
I fall victimized by the haunting melody of your voice
As I begin to reminisce, repeating the words
What if

The autumn breeze brushed softly by and the leaves rustled, floating downwards as the trees slowly bared to nothing but branches in longing for spring's coming. But it wouldn't be for another five months, past the harsh rains and then the cold white winter snow. Only then would its beauty revise into another era, bringing new beginnings, and leaves would fill the trees once again, to have fate repeat itself again and again.
She loved autumn, especially the colors that littered the ground from the beautiful trees. Orange, yellow, red . . . mystical and beautiful, they gently fell from the tree to grace the ground, to be forgotten, left to change bitterly again, revealing a tired brownish color, one filled with longing for the past. . . .
She gazed out; the spice of the air after the mass of rain touched her nose as she then fell into another intoxication. A sweet smell of apples. . . ."Sere!" She turned around to face her mother, who smiled at her, holding a pie in her hands. "Give this to Amber, would you dear?"
She nodded as she grabbed the pie from her hand. "No problem."
She started out the door. She was used to this exchange of food; she had been doing so since she was a child. Her mother would always send her next door, to Amber's house, and then Amber would send *him* to her house. . . .
Darien was her best friend, always so nice, always the gentleman.
There was a two-year difference between them, but it didn't matter. They had been inseparable since she had spoken her first word, "Dare."
But that was dozens of years ago; now it was different. Thousands of miles separated them for years, and she hadn't minded as much as she thought she would.
He would become a doctor, she did not doubt that, and no less the best one in the country. She knew he succeeded at everything he did. But she was different; she struggled with everything in her life. He went to Harvard, the best school in the country, and had to paid nothing. She struggled with her tuition money and her classes, and found out trying to become a teacher was more complicated than she expected.
'Oh Darien, how I wish I was more like you.'

And so we start
Strangely trying to figure out what we want
Confused and bewildered, awkwardly searching about
When our heart already knows
It's you I want

It was refreshing, their relationship. He was a senior, and the school year was slowly ending, bringing up various affairs in need of attention. After all, he was president of the student body. His girlfriend had left him a month ago, or, rather, he'd left her, after he found her cheating with another guy. Maybe that's what left him feeling so uncertain. He knew that he didn't want another girlfriend, not after what had just happened. He wanted just someone to attend social functions with, since it was awkward to be alone. She was the one that came up with the proposal, one day as he drove her home from school. Her eyes gazed at the dewy rain that she wanted to dance in. Hell, she wouldn't mind doing the whole 'singing in the rain' thing.
"Dare, I need a boyfriend," she had said resolutely, her head then turning to him. "But no guy would want me."
He stopped at the red light, turning his head quickly towards her direction, "Come on Rena, you're only 16. You have plenty of time to find a guy who would fit your needs."
His voice was firm and he gave her a comforting smile. She rolled her eyes. "Yeah right, like some guy would like to go out with me! I mean, no one knows me, and no guy wants to be with a girl that isn't popular."
"Rena, popularity is just a game. Don't worry about what people say or think about you." She groaned as she pointed towards the road. A moment later, the light turned green.
"You should be talking, my overzealous friend. What are you? The president of the student body, and everyone knows that elections are total popularity contests!!"
"Yeah, but what's a president going to look like without a first lady?" He sighed deeply, "Damn, and the prom is coming soon also. And I can't just find a girl and spring a relationship that would end in two months. I mean, I don't want to lead anyone on."
She let out a deep intake of breath and then her eyes widened; she knew exactly what they could do. "Darien! I got the perfect idea!!" Her eyes lit up mischievously and a queasy feeling rocked his stomach. The last time she had said those words was when he was eight and she was six, she thought it was okay to wander away in the circus when their parents weren't looking. . . . He groaned at the memory of that day.
"Rena . . . I don-"
"Come on Dare! At least hear me out! I'm older now! More mature! We aren't going to have the circus event haunt us now, are we? I mean, come on, that elephant sure was fun to ride . . . even though those men did yell at us . . . though I'm still wondering what does it means to be a-"
He coughed, shaking his head no. She sheepishly moved on.
"Anyways, this is better than the circus idea. I'm saying, you need a girlfriend, and I need a boyfriend. It's simple; we'll just go out with each other!! A simple, typical fling!! What do you say Dare?"
He gave her an uncertain smile.
"Come on! What do you have to lose? It's not like it's going to be serious. I mean, you need a date for the prom and those formal affairs that you have for those hundreds of clubs run, and, well, I just need to borrow your connections."
He could see all the logic within her words, but still. . . .
"And there're no messy emotions involved! I mean, come on! I'm your little sis, remember?"
He gave in then when she started pouting. He let out a deep breath.
"Okay, sure . . . but remember, no riding elephants or any animals. . . ."
She gave him a quick peck on the cheek.
"Or sneaking on a ride that is too frilly for us. . . ."
Ignoring him, she continued on, "You'll see Darien, this'll be fun!"
"Or eating six things of cotton candy and. . . ."
She smacked him on the head and he quickly dodged, his laughter ringing within the boundaries of the car.

I fall entwined within a dream
Sweet ecstasy filling me
As I find what causes me to regain myself
Is but the picture of you

The days passed him by. He smiled at the magical appearance of the trees that grew outside. Colors filtered the ground and air, as he liked this time of year the most, for it was when everything was untainted. It was a peaceful, when frenzy burned out, the heat softly simmered into cold. . . . He smiled, glad of his accomplishments. He had just finished his last exam. Now, there were no worries. Hell, he was free, only had to go to the ceremony in the winter a couple of months from now.
"I knew you could do it!" He could practically hear her say to him as she grabbed him into her loving arms. He smiled, warmed by the sweet memory of her. Strange how he could remember her so clearly even though he had not seen her for so long. He had been busy, studying, going to class, and working. He lacked time. . . .
He shook his head, wondering how she was now.
His mother was going to be so proud of him.

Whispers of the winds
Falling in your arms
Emerging of ours souls
The disappearance of my heart

He extended his arm to her, as she smiled at him gratefully. "You look stunning!" she said, eyeing him. He wore a simple black tuxedo and a white dress shirt. It was simple yet elegant, his dark hair and beautiful eyes and built body added towards the fill of the outfit. "Hmm . . . tuxedos and you are sooo cute." He laughed, as he then gave her a corsage, her eyes lighting up joyfully.
"Rena, my dear, don't you know that the guy is suppose to be the one complimenting the girl, not the other way around?" She ignored his comment and placed the bracelet of flowers around her wrist, in awe of it. He watched her, pleased by her joy. She looked beautiful. He realized he had never seen her look like a girl before. While she did wear dresses and skirts, none of it compared to what she had on now.
Serena wore a long, dark-blue, satin dress that brought out the fairness of her skin delicate figure, yet still radiate with such warmth. Her hair was tumbling down in curls, pearls and flowers entwined in it. Eyes radiated with joy as she continued to stare at the flowers, mesmerized. Quickly snapping out of it, she retorted quickly, "Well, it's not my fault that the guy looks better than the girl." She shook her head. "Next time, try not to be so handsome."
He felt his cheeks slowly burn and coughed. She giggled at his embarrassment, gave him the white mask, and held up her silver one in her other hand. "A masquerade . . . how romantic for a prom. . . ."
He smiled, enjoying the sight of her elation.
"Shall we enter, princess?"
She giggled softly, "Of course my handsome prince." They entered the room, knocking everyone into a stupor, all in awe of the couple that presented themselves now, a match made in heaven.

My heart is lost, as I search for it
Finally finding it, relief passes through me
And then confusion -
Why is it in your hands?

Kneading the dough, she watched as Amber Chiba stirred the sauce. "Yumm. . . that smells wonderful." Amber laughed as she stared at the twenty-two-year-old in front of her, flour dusted on her nose and cheek. Serena stared at Amber in surprise, "Is there something wrong with me?"
Amber shook her head, swallowing more laughter. "Nothing my dear, absolutely nothing." Serena frowned as she continued to knead the dough, only to have flour spray out at her. She groaned.
"Eeekkk!"
Amber fell into a fit of laughter, as she took pity on the girl. "Rena, how about you wash up while I finish the dough?" She nodded, and began washing. "So, how's school going Sere?"
"It's going fine, Amber! I'm student-teaching at this elementary school. . . the children are sooo adorable!" She exclaimed, her eyes lighting up mirthfully. "I'm having so much fun! The teacher I'm working with says I have a real talent with children."
"That's wonderful sweetheart! And how's your fiancι doing? Have you set a date yet?" She frowned, shaking her head.
"Not yet, he wants his law firm to settle down first before he starts the plans for the wedding." She then sighed, wondering when that would be. The firm's problems had taken longer than expected to sort out, and she was growing unsure about Stefan's intentions. Amber sighed also, her eyes sympathetic. "I always wished my Darien and you would marry ... you are practically like a daughter to me. You were once with him . . . maybe-"
"No, nothing happened between us! It was just a fling. We just needed someone, anyone. It was just that, nothing more. . . ." She spoke with an unyielding voice. "Anyways, it's -"
She was interrupted by the shrill sound of the doorbell. She greatly thanked the heavens above for this distraction. "I'll get it!" She bolted to the door and opened it to find herself face-to-face with a blue-eyed angel.
Her heart beat excelled as her mind grew numb. "Darien. . . ."
He stared at her in awe.

And so the world spins in strange coordination
My heart yearns and yearns for what I am without
And in agony, I cry out for you ...
Only to hear the soft voice of your memory reply hauntingly

They stood, under the shimmering moon that spilled lightly around them. Standing on the veranda of her home, sitting upon the bench while watching the moon. Still dressed in their prom clothing, he watched her, the moon casting silvery shadows on her hair. She tucked a strand behind her ear and turned to him, surprised to see him watching her.
"I had a wonderful time tonight Dare. So magical . . . I felt like a princess from a fairytale book." She pointed to the crown on her head to prove it. He laughed softly his blue eyes glittering with mirth.
"Ahh, you are, my dear. And I am your prince!! Sworn protector of milady!" he said in a deep voice. She laughed.
"A prince? Might you be the frog prince I found yesterday near the pond? I must admit, the kiss we shared was unpleasant. So slimy and icky," she shook her head, "I'm surprise if I didn't turn into a frog myself."
He laughed, drunken by the aura that surrounded her in the moonlight that transcended its usual soft glimmer, and by the beauty of the night that enticed him into sweet bliss.
"My kiss is not that unpleasant," he grumbled out scolding her. "How would you know? You never tried." She looked down at her hands; a soft blush stained her pale cheeks. His eyes lit up impishly as he cupped his hands at her chin, and gently lifted it so she was eye-to-eye with him. In a softer tone, he continued on, "But I see no better way to end such a beautiful night. . . ."
She felt her stomach softly flutter as her breathing became shallow and fast. Slowly his lips descended onto hers. She seemed to melt into him, her lips tasting like honey, and he couldn't think anymore. Nothing mattered except this kiss . . . entrapped within this web of emotions, she couldn't help but fall deeper into it, as she was drawn into the taste of him, and the beating of his heart against hers. . . .
But nothing lasts forever, soon, breaking for air, they stared at each other, shaken and shocked at the intensity of what had passed between them. She was stunned, watching him silently with wide eyes.
"You aren't a frog," he managed out softly, unsure what to really say. She looked away from him, and dug into her purse. The kiss was wonderful, she wanted to say, that it was the way she pictured her first kiss like. . . .all her kisses like. But the words were stuck in her throat, so she replied,
"Yeah, I noticed . . . so maybe your kiss isn't as horrible as I would've expected. . . ."
The tension had grown tenfold, so she let out a fake yawn.
"Goodness, it's dark!! I'd better go get my beauty sleep!! With that, she took out the key from her purse. See ya Dare!"
She pulled out her key opened the door as he watched her mutely.
Before she shut the door, he spoke up. "Sere . . . you don't need any."
She froze and turned around in surprise. "Huh?"
"You don't need any beauty sleep . . . you're already beautiful."
With that, he turned around and left.
She stood there, door half open, eyes trailing at the disappearing figure. . . .
Slowly slipping back into her house and reality, she closed the door lightly, locking it. She leaned against it; the kiss still burned in her mind. She slid down, her head leaned against the door as her stared at the ceiling blankly.
'You're already beautiful. . . .'
She frowned, pondering the meaning. . . .

===================================

In your eyes
I see what I fear
A millions of what ifs
And if onlys
Which burns within my own

She gazed at him, her eyes boring into his depths. He stared back, his heart dancing with an ecstasy of emotions swirling around within the dark blue and dancing with an arousing feeling within him.
        Realty ceased to exist.
And then only they were left.

Chapter 2

I can wake up tomorrow
Forgetting everything and anything
But there is one thing I can never forget
The memory of your kiss

He didn't sleep that night, his heart still tingling madly as he wondered how a single kiss could do so much to him. He longed for more, millions of kisses more. Her sweet honey taste was heavenly; he willed the world to stop spinning.
        But he knew it wouldn't.
         Not after *that*.
Of course time never truly stops
No matter how long you stand still
Everything keeps on going, keeps on changing
Everything but myself

They stared at one another, not really comprehending everything their hearts were telling them at that moment. Ignoring it with great naivetι, time slowly passed by, and cold reality finally beckoned in a single voice.
"Sere, darling! Who's there?"
Awakened from their trance, eyes averted from one another, she finally spoke up, eyes soft. "It's Darien!!! He finally decided to announce to the world that he's alive!!" she said jokingly, attempting to escape the intensity of the moment.
He let out a deep breath and laughed. "Always the jester."
She smiled as she edged towards the left and let him in.
His hand gently touched hers as he passed.
She could feel shivers traveling her spine.
         He just winked.

Deep within unconsciousness
In a dream so beautiful and true
I dream of an everlasting love...I dream of you

She slept wonderfully that night, fatigue slowly dripping through her whole body. She could still feel the warmth of his lips upon hers when she drifted away, her lips longing for another kiss.
She had always wanted to be kiss, but not just kissed, but *kissed*. And, unbeknownst to him, he had given her that kiss. That feeling....he had given her what she had always dreamed of.
         A memorable first kiss.
And hundred more of the same kisses in her dreams.

I gaze at the stars
Longing to gaze at you instead
For they seem to pale
Once compared to you

The awkwardness had passed and they found themselves finally enjoying each other's company. It had been so long since they had spent time together; so long since the last time they had talked....
They sat on her porch like always, upon the bench, gazing at the stars, trying to locate the constellations scattered across the sky, making up some new ones as they went along.
"How is life?" he asked her, turning his head away from the million luminous stars and towards her. His eyes glimmered as he took in his fill of her. As strange as it sounded, she was the same but different. She was still the sixteen-year-old girl that asked him have a simple fling with her, but at the same time a woman who had so much more knowledge of the world around her, and still held an air of innocence. He couldn't explain her. He could never explain her.
"I'm wonderful! I've almost got my teacher's credential, just another year or so." He smiled at that, watching her twirl her beautiful long silky hair in her slender fingers. . .
He shuddered. He longed to touch it. . .to touch her. . .
Past emotions begin to mingle with present ones.
He sighed as she began to chatter about the students that she had been working with.
He couldn't help but long for her.

But I am not suppose to feel this way
Somewhat forbidden, somewhat unjust
Yet my heart won't listen to my protest
But then again, like they say
The heart only knows what is right. . .

She knew that she wasn't supposed to be feeling this way. God knew that it wasn't in the agreement she had put out for them. They had an agreement, an agreement that made so little sense now, when it had made so much sense before.
It was suppose to be a simple, typical fling. There was nothing complicated in that.
But love seemed to always change that. . .
         She blanched.
         Love?!
But it was only a kiss. . .and he was her best friend!!
         Everything was so wrong!!!!

        ...yet so right...
I have been told that in a person's life
They are constantly searching
Searching for one to love and to cherish -
The one that they'll spend eternity with
I have no need to search any more
For it is you, that I always longed for
It is you I love

She couldn't help but sneak glances at him. It was strange, this feeling that swept her insides like a raging storm. She could feel her heart slowly losing itself towards the pureness of the emotions. . .
         She scolded herself.
She had a fiancι. . . .she was suppose to be thinking this way about *him*! Not about. . . .but then she would look into Darien's eyes, and Stefan was only a memory. There was nothing that she wanted to feel but this moment. In his presence. . . .
He reached over and softly stroked her face, then welded his fingers into her hair. "You are very beautiful, Rena," he whispered softly to her. She could feel the impact of his words as her stomach flip-flopped violently. . . .or was that her heart? She couldn't tell. But the feeling was unbelievable.
"Darien. . . ." she whispered back, her eyes gazing into his.
"To think that I almost forgot what wonders had once passed between us. . . ." his husky voice whispered. She could feel her breathing become shallow as he continued. "To almost forget the sweet kisses. . . .the fact that I once loved you. . . . And I still do. . . ."
She wanted to tell him the same, to tell him it was all the same.
But she could feel reality calling. The truth beckoned - she had promised herself to another.
Her eyes then turned, as she stared far off.
         "I'm so sorry, Darien. . . ."
He looked at her confusedly, watching as she took a deep breath.
         "I'm engaged."
His world crashed down to nothingness as the cruel reality of her words peered out from the brazen screen that hid it.
         She loved another.
         She loved another. . . .

Are we still feeling this way?
Awful yet wonderful
In so much love, yet in so much denial?
It puzzles me - what s happening
I cannot help but wonder
Wouldn't it be better -
If we just don't feel

        It was awkward.
It had never been so awkward between them before...the air thick with the tension...
         It just wasn't right.
She was unable to sustain this ill-timed silence. She mustered up all her courage, and spoke up. "Why are we doing this?"
The light in front of them turned red, and as he slowed the vehicle to a stop he turned towards her, surprised. "What do you mean?" He said innocently as she glared at him, her eyes accusing. He sighed. "Oh God, I don't know. . . .it's just that. . . ."
"The kiss," she bluntly said, as he nodded, watching as the red light swiftly turned green. He continued on driving, reverting his attention to the road. "The kiss. . . ." he softly echoed beside her.
She sighed. "There is nothing wrong with kissing. It's a fling! We never said that we were not permitted to kiss. . . .
He frowned and sighed. If only she knew, he couldn't help but wonder. If only. . . ."You're right. A fling. . . .nothing more. . . .there isn't anything wrong with kissing. There is nothing awkward about it."
She nodded. The silence returned with a full force, yet both couldn't help but wonder. . . .
Since when was the kiss awkward?

===================================

I come with such an agreement of love
Only to find out that I am just to late –
You don't love me anymore

Numbness filled him as bleak emotions that jumped inside of him. He could feel his body turn cold, as he stared at her, his dark eyes boring into hers. He couldn't help but want to rant at her, telling her how she could betray him … how she could leave him.
But then he realize one thing -
She was never his to lose in the first place.

Chapter 3

Ignore the sound my yearning heart
I don't need you, truly I don't
Don't mind the tears upon my eyes
At the simple words of neglection
I didn't mean to cry, I didn't mean to hurt
Neglect the sneering sound of shattering
It's just the sound of my broken heart
Shattering piece by piece …
Into nothingness …

"You two are perfect for one anther!" Lita's solemn words to her had made her so warm inside. To perfect to one another … almost like being destined … She let out a sigh, as she felt the pang of an aching emotion tug at her heart. She stared away, catching a glimpse of him in the background – he briefly turned around …
         Yet didn't acknowledge her.
She sighed bitterly, as she closed her eyes tightly.
         Life sucked.

He stared at her in surprise, her eyes meeting his real quickly, as he quickly turned away. A hand then slammed against his back. He glared at the blonde who grinned cockily. "I saw the girl you were at the dance with. Damn." He had finished off with a low whistle exclaimed his appreciation.
"The girl? She's my girlfriend." He said, as he turned and snuck a glance towards her. Andrew raised his eyebrow, "Really? If I had a girl like that, I would be with her 24/7 … especially not with Devon who has an eye on her. He's waiting for you to do something stupid."
Darien couldn't help but feel his blood pulse violently at the thought of Devon even touching Serena! She was his!!
         He blinked back the surprise.
         Where did that come from?

But nothing can stop this emerging emotion
Nothing can stop me from loving you
Not even the single fact that you don't love me
And the single fact that you may never …

He stood up, erupted, and coughed. The stars glimmered up in the sky as he couldn't bear to look at her anymore, not with the knowledge that she would belong to another, bonded forever in a holy bond.
"I should leave … I haven't spent much time with my mother for the longest…"
She watched him leave, her eyes following him every step of the way as she embraced herself, her heart beating fast. Her head swam in confusion, as she couldn't help but get his words stuck within her mind.
         'I once loved you …. And I still do…'
His bold words spoken to would have once cause her such happiness, such contentment …
But that was so long ago.
Now it only brought confusion, which moved within her with an incredible speed. But she couldn't help but feel the tingling feeling within her.
She ignored it as she watched him leave as a bitter ache filled her heart.

It's funny how we contradict ourselves
We both agree that this isn't right
But sometimes being wrong is being right

She had been waiting for him under the canopy of trees, as a soft breeze brushed the back of her neck with a soft tickle. She shuddered, as her eyes gazed at the brazen amount of people that passed by.
None of them were him, yet she wasn't surprise at that fact. The tension lately had been awful between them. Not after that kiss …
The kiss, it brought her heart to a warm and fuzzy state, as she couldn't help but fall into the mystic of it.
"Hey beautiful," a deep voice called out to her. She didn't see him coming at her, her eyes meeting the whitish lavender haired senior. He was tall and well built, with beautiful exotic eyes. 'Almost as beautiful as Darien's', she silently thought, recalling the clear midnight color of his deep eyes … and then she begin to recall his lips … She turned a soft shade of red, as she gazed down on the ground quickly.
The senior dominated her, his movements graceful as he reached for her chin and slowly lifted it, causing them to be once again eye-to-eye. "Simply beautiful, you are. I have no idea why you must waste your delicate time on someone like Darien. He isn't worthy of beauty …" He leaned closer to her, his lips almost meeting hers …
She could feel his lips slowly edge closer, as she edge to the side, not wanting to be caught within his kiss, especially when she was still caught in the memory of *his* kiss. Devon frowned at this, as he took her arm tightly, yet with a gentle edge. "Playing hard to get?"
Darien could feel his blood boiling as he stood an odd fifty feet away.
He had caught Serena's avoidance of the kiss … and Devon's persistence.
He couldn't help but wonder what if Serena didn't avoid the kiss … What if …
He didn't like the idea of another man kissing Serena. It was absolutely detestable! Now directly behind them, Serena looked up, sensing him immediately.
         "Dare!"
Devon turned around, letting go of Serena as he smiled at Darien.
"Ahh, Darien. It's nice to see you." He gave him a cocky smile, as he then turned to Serena.
"If you ever get tired of him, I'm always here …" With a wink, he then turned and strolled away, placing his hands within his pockets and a smile plastered on his face.
Darien wanted to punch the retreating form.
He then turned his attention to Serena, who stared from the retreating form and then to the fuming form before her. He then grabbed her, "Don't you ever think about it!" He had snapped at her, as she stared at him in shock.
"You're mine … No one by me can kiss you…" he said angrily, as he then slanted his lips on hers possessively, as she molded herself into his arms. Falling deeply into his kiss, she placed her arms around his neck, her mind still ringing at his words. 'You're mine…'
She couldn't help but find his possessiveness heartwarming …

And the thought of you forever gone
Causes my to lose all meaning to life
I find out life without you
Is not life at all …

He couldn't sleep that night, the memory of their closeness continued to make his body shudder in delight. But he was never to share that closeness with her again, never be able to kiss her senseless and possess her.
No, instead another man would do exactly that. Another man would have her, to share the sweet intimacy that he would never have …
He felt his stomach lurch in alarm.
         It. Was. Not. Right.
He wanted her – damn it, he wanted her more than he wanted anything in the world…

Simple bliss, so warm and wonderful
I fall into the pure beauty of it
Almost forgetting that this is just a faηade
That this would never be anything more

The passion was mind-blowing between them. It wasn't a lustful type of passion – but the passion that Romance novels try to portray but fail to grasp the full pureness and beauty of it.
They were so close, as they days failed to glimmer such a bright light shared between them. Instead, it grew steadier as each passing day went by. Their souls slowly merged together, becoming more spell binding as they found that their kisses drove them out of reality, as they become lost within their bubble …

I know I don't have a chance
That you might have fallen in love too deep
But you should know -
No one can love you as much as I love you

They avoided each other the next day or so she avoided him, that was, until dinner. Dinner had been a joint dinner with both families, celebrating Darien's achievement. She was mindless, wanting desperately for someone to hold onto during dinner, someone to hide her from Darien …
         She called Stefan.
And so now they were here, eating dinner as Stefan talked to her father deeply engrossed within their conversation … She could feel Darien's eyes on her, as he sat directly across the table. She toyed with the food on her plate, wondering why she had come up with such a horrible idea.
Darien glared across the table and at the man sitting next to her and fumed.
This was the jerk that was going to take his Serena away from him?
She took a look upward, into his eyes. She stared at him, with a trouble expression and then looked down again, staring blankly at the half eaten plate and coughed. "I'm done," she announced, as she edged out of her seat and headed for the kitchen. Everyone was to involved within their conversation to notice her leave … or see him follow her.
She entered the kitchen as she placed her dishes in the sink and sagged against the cabinets. The sound of the door opening caused her to turn her head and look upward towards the dark haired figure.
"Done so soon?" He had asked her as he stalked towards her, his eyes seemed to capture her. She felt her spin slowly shudder as she couldn't help but find breathing become more complicated.
"You barely ate anything." He was so close … so close …
"I was hungry," she grasped out, as he raised his eyebrow. "Really? This coming from the girl who devoured everything in sight when she was younger?"
She took a deep breath as he turned away from her.
"Only you can make me feel so much hatred and so much love at the same time." He said, as he turned his head back and looked at her. "How I want to kill that basterd that dare one day claim you as his wife … to take you in his arms … and freely kiss you like there was no tomorrow …"
She wanted to sink into the walls and disappear.
"Have you forgotten the sweet kisses we shared? I haven't … I can never…" He inched closer to her, his lips almost touching … "How I long…"
His lips captured her, as she fell into it, victimized in the tantalization of the kiss.
The door open, a curse interrupted the kiss.
She turned to see Stefan glare at them.
She really did wish she could disappear.

Autumn leaves are the cruelest
So beautiful and bright
Eventually wilting away and dies
Leaving nothing but a broken memory

Everything was perfect, as school finally ended, bringing summer heat along with it. He had been accepted to Harvard, the whole reality of the situation had not kicked in until the week before he had to leave.
He was going to leave her.
His heart lurched insanely at the thought of losing her forever. It was just … it wasn't right. He didn't want to lose her; he didn't want to leave her…
Be the fathom words of their agreement would ring within his ears.
A fling, this was just a fling …
"I'm going off the college next week."
She stared at him, her eyes blank as she smiled at him and nodded.
"I bet you are very excited."
He stared, wanting her to say something … anything …
She didn't, for the words were stuck within her throat. She was afraid to say anything … afraid that she'll say something she'll regret.
She cried herself to sleep that night.

In the midst of the everything
I turn at him, expecting to forget all about you
But instead, I find myself
Wishing you were here instead

He shook his head, furious. His eyes darting at the two of them.
"Stefan…" she called out to him as he stalked away. She tired to follow him as Darien's hand reached out to her, pulling her back.
"Don't leave," he softly told her, as she could feel herself becoming lost by his touch.
"But … I have …" He pulled her in her arms. "Don't leave me."
But she couldn't help but see the irony of everything. He had left her before. He had left her, without calling her or writing her, disappearing off into the world. She … couldn't stand if he did that again.
         She loved him.
She knew she did … she knew she always did …
But her love for him had always been hurtful, bringing her so much pain.
She yanked herself away from his arms.
"What makes you think I want to be with you? What makes you think that it's love that you feel for me? It's been so long! Tell me something, have you ever thought of me when you were gone? You haven't, have you?"
He felt the words hit him deeply … as he couldn't help but know that she was right. He did not think of her at all when he was away … but he knew he loved her. He could feel the emptiness that once filled his heart when he was away disappear at the sight of her. He knew it was love …
         But now he was uncertain.
Love was never one sided … at least true love was never one sided …
         "Serena …"
She shook violently, her heart lurching at the impact of her words sinking into her mind. It was true, by the look of his eyes.
She closed her eyes, thinking about the hurt expression on her fiancιe's face. "Oh god … Stefan …"
And then she realized the horrible truth about Stefan. She could never marry him … even if Darien had not shown up. For she knew her heart belonged to him … since so long ago …
She felt the bitter pang in her heart … but he didn't love her…
He watched her, crying over her lost fiancιe as he could feel bitterness in his stomach. He had ruined everything for her.
He stared up at the bare ceiling.
He had ruined her chance of happiness.
         He bitterly sobbed.

So we stand, staring at each other
Both afraid to speak – knowing that words are too painful
Aching, throbbing, wishing … why these words?
Why did we have to say goodbye?

"So this is goodbye?" His words were crisp, clear, as she stared passed him, to the busy halls of the airport. People busied themselves, spinning about – but she could not see them. All she saw was her heart slowly breaking apart …
Falling into the crisp swelling air of pain
She took a deep intake of breath as she tilted her head slightly so her eyes then meet his.
It was a stupid action to do, for now she felt the pain multiply, as she shuddered softly, the pain being so overbearing. "Yes, it must be." She replied simply, the words 'don't leave me' was stuck within her throat.
A fling, she had to remind herself of the mutual agreement. This was a fling.
She felt the unwanted tears enter her eyes as she scold at them, banning them to fall, banning them to let him see how much she would really miss him. "Good luck at school," she softly whispered, as she could feel herself slowly dying.
How he wished to take her in his arms and tell her how much she really meant to him … but he couldn't. He wouldn't. His friends once told him that he had to much pride, that one day it'll deprive him of something he truly wanted.
         He wanted her.
         God how he wanted her.
Yet she was untouchable to him … there was no chance …
He took her in his arms, 'one last time', he told himself. The sweet scent of black cherries filled his lungs. Always her scent, always his reminder …
"I'll be seeing you Rena," his deep voice told her, as she held onto him a little tighter. "I'll miss you."
She managed to disengage herself from his arms, as she could feel the cold reality taunting her, as loneliness crept in so quickly. He kissed her on the cheek, a soft gently kiss, and then picked up his duffle bag and turned about and left, stopping at the gate, waving goodbye.
He slowly disappeared, as she softly whispered the words that she had longed to say, "I love you."
         But it was too late.
         He had already left.

At each moment of longing
Breaking, shattering
Constantly morning
Why did I let you go?

Dark clouds cluttered in the cold sky, it covered what little sunlight that was left in the sky. Autumn has frozen over, as winter had dominated the area … winter, so cold, so icy … she let out a shudder as she sat on the porch of her house.
She could not feel the cold nip at her as she sat, gazing at nothing. There was nothing, no more hope, no more dreams …
Everything inside of her was dead. A cleansing sense of numbness covered her, so much that she could not breathe, she could not think. All she could do was morn …
He had left her - again. But this time without a goodbye, or anything. Why? Why did he have to leave her?
Bleakness. Streaming tears of darkness. Her heart, constantly pleading but never heard.
Did he really not care for her? Was she really right?
         Unanswered questions, broken teardrops.
If only … if only …
But there was nothing she could figure out, nothing she could do to mend the crashing of heart.
         'My fault … my fault…'
         Shattering …
         'I love you… I love you …'
If only he could hear her pleas …

Epilogue

Living no longer had a meaning. Life had no meaning …
Everything was so bleak and unclear, the world spinning in frustration as they found that there really was no life that they could life … all they could do was exist, emotionless, loveless … with the words that was never spoken to one another repeated silently in their minds.
She turned around from the mirror, no longer being able to look at the reflection. The reflection no longer showed herself, but a woman who was lost, who knew nothing but a dream that had flown away to far, a pain that was too deep for words.
She couldn't help but wonder if he felt the same way.
She shook her head, disgusted at herself for she knew he would never feel for her. An ache in her heart, tears escaping from her, as she slipped into eternity, cold and alone.

And the revelation
That you're the only one
I can ever love
Brings me near to tears
For it's already too late

Everything was an empty void, and all he could do was stare off and watch the empty blackness within his soul. Uncertainty had claimed him for it's own, as he found that it was everything he was now, for he knew nothing anymore. He was lost, so very lost without her …
He cursed himself for being a fool. He cursed himself for being too late, for being too foreword. He cursed himself for everything … everything except loving her. Loving her was never a mistake; it was always a beautiful thing … like her. She was beautiful, her heart, her mind, and her soul …
He could still remember her tears and her words …
He tried to rid himself of the memory of her despair for it had slowly took over him … it became him. Her pain, her tears, her words were now his …
He could feel a numbing sensation run through him, as he thanked God for it. To not feel was a blessing, for he could stop all these running emotions for just awhile … just until …
But he deserved this all it was his entire fault.
His mind spun him around, as he vaulted up from his bed, the ringing sound of the doorbell jarring him up, as he followed the sound mindlessly and then slowly opening the door.
The angel from his dream stood in front of him as he stared in surprise.
         "R…enn…a?"
He lifted up his hand and touched her, hoping that it was reality, and not just one of his dreams.
He felt flesh against his hand. A jolt seem to go through him, as if he was truly brought back to life …
"Rena." His voice was harsh and still in disbelief. She took a deep breath.
         "Hello Darien."

I never did realize
The deepness of my love
Until you were truly gone
And now all I can do
Is wonder-
Do you feel it too?

She didn't understand why she was here … It was a question she had asked herself over and over again – on the airplane, in the taxi, and right now, on his front door. She stood there for five minutes, contempting whether or not she should ring the doorbell as she stared at it, willing it to ring by itself and then willing it to break so that it did not work anymore.
She had finally busted up the courage to ring the doorbell as she pressed it once, then twice; only to withdraw her hand and curse at herself as her head exclaimed to her all the reasons why it was a bad idea. But it was already too late to take it back for everything was already set.
She begun to wonder if he was home, and if he was alone … Her eyes widen. What if he had another woman already??
She could feel herself become uncertain, as she wanted to edge away from the door.
'You have to do this…' she scolded at herself, as she mindlessly stayed put, wishing she were anywhere but here.
The door opened, his eyes met hers …
Everything disappeared, all her worries, all the realities …
"Rena…" he had spoken in broken phrases as she could feel his hesitation. His hand reached for her, as she felt a spark go through her when he touched her. She was breathless at the jolt that just went through her, as she could feel herself slowly come back to life, slowly living once more…
         "Rena…"
She could feel the pulsing of his heart match hers without even feeling his pulse as she took a deep breath, she said, "Hello Darien."
She couldn't help but feel breathless all of a sudden as he fumbled slightly, not knowing what to do.
"I … Rena …" he was in lost of words, as he stared at her in awe.
"What are you doing here?" He managed to say, as his hand still stayed upon her cheek, stroking it gently, making sure that she wouldn't disappear. His hands then wove themselves into her hair, as he played with the golden strands.
         "I … don't know," she responded truthfully. "I just, I don't know…"
Her eyes tightly closed, as she tried to find the words but there were only three that jumped out into her mind the quickest.
         'I love you …'
But she was afraid, so afraid. What if he didn't love her? He had left her a second time… what if he was mad at her for not believing him in the first place?
She stood there rigid, looking down onto the ground all of a sudden, no longer finding the courage that had pulse through her throughout the whole trip here.
He could feel the silence between them become heavy as his then removed his hand from her hair and tilted her head up with it. "Serena …"
He looked beautiful that way, his voice husky as his beautiful blue eyes gazed at her with an unreadable expression, "Every night, I would dream of this day."
She stared at him in surprise.
"A day when you would return to me, a day when I can go down to my knees and beg you to stay with me. I need you so much Rena … I want you so much… I love you, I always have, I always will. You will always be the only one for me"
She stared at him in surprise and shock. "Please, give me another chance, I'll do anything to have you here with me …"
Tears fell from her face, as she could feel his words slowly sink into her. He stared in horror as he wiped her tears away. "Don't cry, please don't cry …"
She laughed at the desperation in his voice as she whispered, "I'm only crying because I'm so happy … I love you too … ever since I was a little girl, it's always been you, no one else."
He smiled, as he picked her up, holding her tightly against him.
         "It will always be you."
The door closed shut behind them with a soft bang.
