Peter Lorre made eight films for
Warner Bros. with Sydney Greenstreet. "The Conspirators", made in 1944,
paired the two as part of an anti Nazi spy ring working out of Portugal.
In this scene, they are conferring
with femme fatale spy, Suki Dickson, who is to infiltrate the Nazi headquarters
and coerce some of the top brass into giving her vital information. Here
she demonstrates, using a banana, how she plans to ingratiate herself with
the enemy, and obtain Nazi secrets. Peter and Sydney, well aware of the
importance of her mission, look on with concern for her safety written all over their
faces.
This is an original hand colored still of the scene as it was actually filmed. Needless to say, this is not what audiences saw when the "The Conspirators" was finally released. Arguments that this scene would bring the American public to understand the efforts and sacrifices of those involved in the Resistance fell on the deaf ears of the censors. All footage of this scene is believed to have been destroyed. Still, the scene is to this day considered by film historians to be a milestone in the depiction of the gritty realities of a world at war.
