The brief was up to us, so a quick run-down;

To design a vehicle with a sports nature with the capacity to sit 4 adults 2+2. The styling will be a blend of current trends (95) and 80's themes. The model should be viable to be released within the next 5 years.

This page consists of photographs and drawings of my design proposal for my final year at University for Automotive Design. The model is the "GT Coupe" 1:4 developed and conceived in 1995.

Many sketches were done to develop the GT Coupe.
From the thumbnails, the selection are part scans of
the A2 size drawings. Most of them are the finished
renderings to present the project with the finished model.

The project took around 8 months while juggling through other subjects.

The model was produced using expanded polystyrene with automotive clay on top. A tape drawing was done to transfer the design over to the clay. One half was completed first to check if the highlights were flowing correctly.

Highlights are the major surface reflections which show the movement of light over the surface. To check the highlights, foil is glued to the surface. It is cheaper and quicker this way than to paint it.

Then the car is balanced to the other side, a time consuming exercise because points are taken from one side and transferred to the other side. One at a time.

There may be over a few hundred points in a typical 1:4 scale model. While a full scale could mean hundreds of thousands of points!

The finished GT Coupe  painted in "Teal Blue" to
to highlight the changes in surfaces. Note the flares
incorporated into the fenders. This provides a wider
track but also giving the vehicle an opportunity to
become a race car if desired. Technically, the flares
were to have extracting holes to allow heat and
brake dust to escape when the car is put through
it's paces. There is a hint of Zagato by the double
humps on the roof.

The rear view with the optional wing. A single 3 inch
exhaust tip was added to show aggression (common in
high performance cars during the last couple of years).
I have also incorporated Lancia Fulvia taillights, to give the
Coupe character.
The GT Coupe without the optional spoiler. Compare the two shots.Note the front lip was an aspect of the 70's. This is currently used in the infamous Ferrari 355 series (my design came out before the 355). Without the high wing, the Coupe posses an elegance, like the current Peugeot Coupe. ( A-pillar section is very similar but also my design was conceived before the Peugeot).

The design is similar to the Current Supra and Ferrari's 456 GT. No regrets but I love to do another automobile, possibly a sedan or a super car. (It's comical to see the new Mercedes S-Class with similar headlights. Late 98 / early 99)
