The designers of Silent Hill did quite a bit of research on various ancient belief systems to create the eerie atmosphere of the game, as well as to lend an unsettling air of authenticity to the horrific events that take place in the game. In doing their research, they created what is probably the first truly literate "survival horror" gaming experience-- drawing from ancient magic books, Jewish mysticism, and modern horror and science fiction authors and filmmakers. The result is a uniquely compelling story, rich with imagination, that lends itself particularly well to interpretation and extrapolation by fans of the game.
