Jimmy watched the rain splatter against the window and trickle down to the sill below.
He saw the trees swaying gently in the breeze in the park across the way.
The peaceful scene was a stark contrast to the turmoil he felt inside.

He turned away from the window and looked back at the bed. The hospital bed was surrounded by an array of machines that beeped and hummed and showed numbers in their own indecipherable language. He couldn't guess at what most of them were doing, but he knew one thing, they were keeping her alive and that was all that mattered to him.

They gave him time. Time he needed to be with her, to tell her that he loved her from the first time they had met...time to tell her goodbye.
Jimmy pulled the room's only threadbare chair next to the bed and sat down heavily in it. He took his wife's hand, careful not to disturb the tubes running out of it. "What a pair we make, huh?" Jimmy said with his voice cracking and the tears beginning to well at the corners of his eyes. "I never thought this was how we were going to turn out. I never thought this was going to be our story." Jimmy sobbed quietly as he laid his head on his wife's hand, as tears fell began to fall upon her bed.
