Wausau is situated in north central Wisconsin. Athletic Park is used today by the Wisconsin Woodchucks of the Northwoods League, a collegiate summer league. Built in 1929 of masonry construction, this fan-friendly venue was home to minor league baseball for almost half a century serving the Reds, Indians, Phillies, Browns, Tigers, Mets, Mariners and Orioles organizations:
Wausau Lumberjacks, Class C Northern League, 1936-42
Wausau Lumberjacks, Class D Wisconsin State League, 1946-53
Wausau Lumberjacks, Class C Northern League, 1956-57
Wausau Lumberjacks, Class A Midwest League, 1975-78
Wausau Timbers, Class A Midwest League, 1979-90
The team moved to Geneva, IL, after the 1990 season and became the Kane County Cougars.
This is a classic old-time minor league ballpark in every respect. Wooden-bat baseball is still played here and I would strongly recommend this wonderful little stadium to any ballpark collector.
A middle section of reserved season-ticket bench seating with backrest, flanked by left and right sections of general admission bleacher seating, is under the covered grandstand behind home plate. Additional general admission bleacher seating is located down each base line. The press box is located behind the last row of reserved seating.
The original dugouts are built into the base of the grandstand and have been replaced by separate, larger, free-standing dugouts outside of the grandstand; the original built-in dugouts are now used for extra-charge special fan seating areas (i.e., field-level luxury boxes).
