In 1986 the Toronto Blue Jays established a Class A New York-Penn League team in St. Catharines, the St. Catharines Blue Jays through the 1995 season and then the St. Catharines Stompers through 1999. When I visited this ballpark a groundskeeper was on his tractor cutting the grass beyond the outfield fence and I took advantage of the open gate to prowl around with my camera.
The Blue Jays now maintain their NYPL team in Auburn, NY. Since the departure of the Stompers, Community Park has hosted various amateur levels of baseball. Although this ballpark has a minor league feel to it, complete with train tracks running behind the first base side of the grandstand, St. Catharines may not be a town where pro ball can be successfully supported.
