Shabbat, October 8, 2005 - Today is Shabbat Shuva, the Beautiful Gorge, Our New Friend, Fethiye - Our Next DestinationI did not hear the rooster, the river is too loud. Today is Shabbat Shuva. Shabbat that falls between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (Shabbat of Returning). I was thinking of Rabbi Dan and all my friends at Mishkon. I read in my siddur, read some Tehilim and prayers for Rosh Hashanah and Benny is joining me in singing "Mi'ma'a'ma'kim Ke'ra'a'ticha Ya... Eli, Shema Koli Shema Ta'ha'nu'nai.....Eli....." I look out the window, the beautiful gorge, the rushing river, the bridge, high mountains, the small bazaar on the banks of the river, the campsite, the rooster, the pine trees, God, you have been good to us and we will be good to the world and to each other. Sometimes it is easier to be good to the world than to each other.... We had breakfast with the rooster and a new friend joined me for coffee, a sweet cat. Hassan, the owner of the camp came to tell us that his friend could give us a ride to Fethiye, our next destination. Fethiye, Tan Pension. An elderly couple runs the place. We have a nice clean room with bathroom. The size of the bathroom is about the same as in an airplane and the sink faucet is also the shower and you take a shower above the toilet. A great bonus: there is a kitchen for the guests use!!! I can cook!!! And the cost of the room, 15 YTL for both of us. YTL = Yeni Turkish Lira (yeni = new). This year, 2005, they can use the new and old money, so one lira is the same as one million lira. Starting at 2006, they will have to use only the new lira. Our room is on the top floor; what can I say about the view, take a look at the photos. The owner of the place offered us drinks and pastries. We took a walk around town, where there is a bank, an Internet Cafe, a market and an ice cream place. Fethiye is very European, mostly German influence. There are European tourists everywhere. The supermarket is spacious and run very efficiently, the restaurants offer western menus. Many real estate offices try to sell properties to foreigners. It is a very old town but it was leveled in the 1958 earthquake. It has an inner bay that is an excellent natural harbor, protected from storms by an island. The much larger outer bay has 11 more islands. Many cruise lines offer a 13 Islands tour. Tomorrow we will visit the ghost town of Kayakoy. Back to main page and index of daily reports |
