Tuesday-Wednesday, 4-5 October, 2005 - Rosh Hashanah at Kas, Conversation with a Young Couple, he is English, she is German, the Culture of Traveling

We would usually be out on our expedition at this time, but Benny is involved in a very interesting conversation with a young couple, he is English, she is German, so I am taking the time to catch up on my reports. The Ani Pension has a computer on the balcony, over looking the bay, so I do not have to suffer smoked Internet cafe.

The kids are great at writing me, sending pictures so that I feel as if I am home with them. There were fires in California and we were not aware of it. The fire was close to Yael's home. The police asked them to pack up. They packed the car and waited at home. The alert was off later. Poor Chad is suffering from the smoke. Karen is writing long email, Owen's birthday, Rosh Hashana menu and celebration, taking Owen to hear the Shofar. Guy is currently in Washington with Hannahle and Ari got a job at an agency and he is very happy about it. They were celebrating Rosh Hashana at Avi's new place and they all enjoyed it.

We celebrated Erev Rosh Hashana in the company of young Israelis. We enjoyed their company: They are intelligent, interesting and opinionated.

Tuesday, October 4

We wished each other Shana Tova, mainly good health and thought about our friends who need an extra wish for good health.

After breakfast, in the company of annoying bees, we spent a few hours planning the rest of our stay here.

We want to spend one week in Istanbul and about three days in Ephesus. There is so much to see, we have to make choices now and plan our days carefully. Benny holds the maps and I read the Lonely Planet. He asks for information, what do they say about Kekove, Parara, Kalkan, Kos, Fethiye, the butterfly valley? What is the best way to get there? I search the book, read the information, the discussion; do we want to go there? Did we not see enough ruins? Do we want to see the museum? My engineer, with his straight handwriting make a perfect chart. I love the process. Tomorrow we will go to Kos (pronounced kosh) and maybe we will rent a car for one day to cover all the attractions around.

In the afternoon we walked to the neighboring town of Cirali. On the way back we went for a short swim and sat at the beach and read.

Wednesday, October 5

Good-bye to our tree house, we are on our way to Kos, I will change the keyboard to Turkish, to get the right spelling: Kos

Back to English. The road winds along the coast, we are above the coast, the road is carved in the mountain. There are old ruins along the way, islands in the sea, green houses with tomatoes in the valley below.

I was thinking about the culture of traveling. When your goal is traveling, you see the world through different eyes. Your mind is clear to observe to see. Everything looks even more beautiful, because there is time and the set of mind to accept and observe the beauty. Every mountain, cliff, flower or a rooster becomes so special. It becomes your traveling companion.

I love the way that we travel. It sounds rough, but we actually have very comfortable accommodation every night, with daily warm shower, we wash our cloths almost daily and we feel clean and healthy. The longest distance that we had to carry our heavy backpack was from the otogar to the pension, and it is never more than twenty minutes walk.

It is exciting to come to a new town, new pension, and within five minutes it becomes your new home and the other guests your community for the next few days.

We settled in the Ani pension. We have a nice room with a balcony overlooking the bay. There is a beautiful terrace on top of the building, which is where we eat breakfast. Across the water is the Greek island, Meis or Castellorizo. We are walking around town, along the marina, enjoying the scenery.
