Dear Shifra,

Thank you for your reply and update. I went through the pictures and found that Izmir-34 needs 180 degrees rotation.

You must update the details.

The Jews were located in Aydin, Tire, Bergama, Turgutlu, Kusadasi and other villages that became towns as time went by. My mother was borne in Kusadasi and not my Grand Parents. The school that existed in front of the Beit Israel synagogue is Benei Berit. I started the kinder garden there and learned after than in Talmud Tora.

There are more synagogues in Izmir. Some of them are closed. Some are restored and open on holidays, Shabat and special occasions. The one in Asansor is open on holidays only. The same is with two others next to the Market. The name of one of them is Shalom Synagogue. Another synagogue will be restored and become a Museum. Beit Halevi synagogue in Karatas was destroyed after an earthquake.

There is a street called Havra Sokagi named after the synagogue (means street of synagogue). There was another synagogue in Alsancak and doesn't exist anymore.

I'm happy to know that you're having nice time. How was Bergama? Did you enjoy it there as you enjoyed Ephesus? Actually I forgot to tell you about the Jewish Community in Bergama.

I'm leaving on the 24th for India and will be back on the 24th of November. I'll follow your website and get updated. I'll appreciate reading your mails.

All the best to Beni, enjoy and have fun.

Wishing both of you all the best.

Sam.

Happy Birthday to you

we arrived at Istanbul and already visited the Rabbinical Office here in Galata in order to obtain permission to visit the local synagogues.

Our website is updated and the story of Izmir is there. When you go to the website, click on the right side on the date and you get the story and pictures. There is a short slide show in every page, and more photos if you click for more.

We stayed at Seljuk at Kiwi Pension and had a very interesting visit at Ephesus. We only went to Sirince, we usually follow the Lonely Planent recommendation and it works for us.

We will be in Israel October 29-November 15.

Take care
