Your pet should have his or her first medical checkup by the end of the first week in your care.
Common Signs of Illness
1. Repeated vomiting or coughing.
2. Frequent diarrhea (with mucus, blood or straining) or occasional diarrhea lasting more than 48 hours.
3. Lethargy.
4. Refusal to eat on 2 consecutive days.
5. Fever with rectal temperature of greater than 103F when your pet is resting.
6. Straining or inability to urinate or defecate.
7. Excessive crying or whining without obvious cause.
8. Any unusual or persistent skin rash.
9. A lump that appears to be enlarging or does not disappear within a week.
10. Squinting of the eye(s) for an extended period of time, or swelling around the eyes.
Also, remember that chocolate and the Poinsettia plant are poisonous to dogs and cats! If you see your pet ingest a quantity of either one, call your vet immediately!
