Skyler Sheeder Rhetoric I Larry Pearce 31 January 2008 Descriptive Essay: My Favorite Place! One of my favorite places to go, when I get the time is the outdoors. I love to go hunting and fishing, always in search for that big trophy. The outdoors is somewhere I can go to relax and get away from everything. It is so calm in the woods, there is no yelling and bickering or listening to lectures. That’s why I enjoy going into the woods to hunt, because it sets me apart from all my troubles in life, until it gets dark. When I go into the woods, I really get to see the true beauty of nature. My favorite time to hunt is archery season in the fall. At this time the leaves are changing colors, the animals are getting their winter coats, it’s just a beautiful site to see. The color of the woods in the fall is so vibrant and beautiful. The different colors of yellow, orange, and brown cover the forest floor and treetops. The animals in the fall are amazing looking they get fattened up and their nice warm winter fur grows, making them look beautiful. In the woods, there are many different sounds. The sound of the woods is very relaxing there is the sound of a light or heavy wind blowing through, and making the leaves rustle. The different sounds of all the species of birds chirping, which is sometimes disruptive when the crows are around. The woodpeckers’ peck the trees and the turkeys gobble and pluck. Then there is the sound of the other animals. The animals walking towards you on the dry leaves making them crunch. Bucks grunting and wheezing, squirrels belting their call throughout the forest, coyotes barking, and the occasional moo of a cow if you hunt near a farm. But, the most relaxing noise in the woods is running water. The creeks trickle off rocks and little waterfalls. The creeks also run through rapids, it’s just a very relaxing sound to listen too. The taste and smell of the woods is very hard to explain. The smell of the woods is just like walking outside to get some fresh air. There are some unique smells in the woods, that you don’t smell everywhere. Some plants in the woods give off odd odors. During the rut for whitetails, you can sometimes smell their glands if they come close enough. The taste of the outdoors is the same as if you were to walk outside and try to taste the air. Relating back to smell though for hunters, if you where cover scent when you go hunting, sometimes you can taste it. I have a cover scent that smells like dirt for when I go hunting. If I apply enough of it on my clothes, I sometimes feel like I can taste the dirt. The feeling of the woods is one of a kind. If it’s a chilly morning with a frost and your sitting there in your tree stand you can just feel the cool wind blowing all over your body like someone’s touching you. Also in the woods, you get that feeling of being alone and nothing has control over you. There is also the feeling that someone is watching your every move. When I was younger, sitting the dark in the morning, I always had the feeling somebody was watching me. The feeling of the cold metal bars you’re your tree stand making you freeze is not really pleasant, but every hunter experiences that. The feeling I hate the most, is when my fingers and toes are so cold I think they’re going to break if I don’t get up and move around. The woods are a great place to be if you like to forget about all of your troubles, and have a few hours to yourself. There are some downfalls to the outdoors, but they can all be fixed. I think you will find more positives in the outdoors than negatives. The woods are a fun place to be. I think everyone should experience the outdoors in their life at least once.
