Muthu Maharaja (1995) Tamil film dubbed in Hindi. Starring Rajnikant and Meena. DVD released by Eros/B4U. Anamorphic. 146 minutes.
Japan's favorite Indian film, Muthu Maharaja, was made in Tamil language, but is presented on this DVD with dubbed Hindi. Eros have given Muthu an anamorphic transfer with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, which is taken from a fairly clean print. The Dolby stereo is very good, and swithces to 5.1 when Rahman's superb score is heard.
The film itself is slickly made and well-produced. The cinematography, set designs and choreography are top-notch. Highlights include "Rangeela Rangeela" as the dancing, music, sets and constant, costume-changes all mesh together seamlessly; or "Kuluvalile" which features exotic dancing, a bass-heavy Rahman song, and a memorable scene as Rajnikant alternately cradles and strums his sitar and co-star Meena back and forth.
The only knocks are the exclusion of subtitles on the songs of Rahman's inspired score, and of the lack of extras.
Muthu Maharaja is a surprisingly well-done transfer by Eros of a very good flick and is definitely recommended....
