Interview with Circus Boy

This interview originally appeared in Bitch Of Nebecunezzar #1.

Your singing on the original "Bookstore Manager" is so vulnerable, full of raw emotion. Were these lyrics personal to you? Did you have a hard time with that song emotionally? Is it based on actual life experiences?
Bookstore Manager 1: As only you & Jason know, BM1 was before all else one of my first attempts to sound like Saviour Machine (see #8). It is rooted in my first year of work in "college," where I worked with a man who I swear to this day secretly wanted to kill his wife and declare war on the evil Mikhail Gorbechev. I hate him. Also, I think the sound I was "seeking" in this "song" was perfected in the famous "Bowling Class" which ends with a despair-ridden "Gutterball."

What is your fondest memory from the ol' recording days?
Ha ha, the day we challenged the New Ross KKK to a game of kickball. Those were some memories...

Is there any truth to the rumors that the members of SBH despised each other and used to beat each other into bloody pulps in between songs?
Oh yeah, that's actually true. Actually, my second fondest memory of recording days is when we beat Michael to death with Keith Dodson's go-kart helmet.

How about any "embarassing moments?"
There was that time I ran out of gas & Jason & I had to hike to a fat trucker's house to call for help. Actually happened.

SBH has several songs with "shoes" in the title. Why?
We got all the songs on sale at, say, DANNERS.

What's this beef with funnyman Danny DeVito? What about HM?
DeVito got a deer drunk & threw it front of HOG I. HM is still waiting for CRUX to convert Sammy Hagar to Christianity.

Who are your biggest musical influences?
Let's see...there's Bob Lang, William "The Fridge" Perry, SHAQ. Maybe the Monkees or Beatles or whatever they were called...the one Dudley Moore was in...

In "Internships Give You Ulcers" you state that "without hyperbole Saviour Machine is the most controversial band of the decade," but how do you feel they compare to SBH?
Saviour Machine IS the most controversial band of the decade, without hyperbole. End of discussion.

What are your favorite SBH songs? Which do you feel is your overall best album?
Well, I'd say "Frosted Jeans," "Hazard" - mainly that one series of tapes we did on that one spring break in your bedroom - Reload II-V or something, and I think one was subtitled "Only the Strong Survive," but I could be wrong. I also like "Pagan Bells," the one where Michael scats, "Turn the Crank," and I consider the entire Tribute to Di tape one really long song. One very long song.

Do you think SBH is any closer to revealing to the public the true cause of Princess Diana's death - her heroin overdose?
Maybe, but I think people are more interested in the long-term affair with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar...BASKET-BOO-YAH!
